Clifford ‘Kipper’ Lee Jr.

Clifford "Kipper" Lee Jr., 80, of Clay Street, Green Springs, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.

Kipper entered this world the same way he left it. He was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Adams Township, to Clifford Sr. and Pearl Mae (Wiehl) Lee.

Kip was always a hard-working person and began his long career at Whirlpool Corp. when he was only 16 years old. He was laid off 6 months before his 18th birthday and was rehired when he was of legal age.

Kipper served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1954 during the Korean conflict as a 1st Class Seaman aboard the USS Weiss. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, Navy Occupations Service Medal (Asia), Korean Presidential Unit Citation, China Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Kip married Thelma Jean "Tubby" McClanahan Dec. 19, 1955, in Fremont, and she preceded him in death in 2002. Clifford worked at Whirlpool Corp. for 50 years until he retired.

Kip was involved with many activities throughout his life, from coaching Drillets and baseball to being involved in softball and bowling leagues. He was an avid race car fan and enjoyed building stock cars with his family and friends, as well as watching Dale Earnhardt. He also enjoyed his Wednesday morning breakfast club at Clyde Eagles with his brother, Earlie Lee, and good friend, Don Sours. He was a life member of Green Springs VFW, member of Clyde Eagles and a former member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Green Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

Clifford is survived by two sons, Daryol E. (Cindy) Lee of Green Springs and Kevin "Charlie" (Velma) Lee of Fremont; two siblings, Earlie Lee and Sally Day, both of Green Springs; six grandchildren, Kristen (Mike) Bruns, Brooke (Drew) Lee, Kandice (Johnny) Lee, Kevin (Misty) Lee, Keith Pert and Rachel Pert; eight great-grandchildren, Madison, Bryce, Marissa, Kollin, Macy, Karson, Grant and Meadow; and special friend, Jackie Cunningham.

He also was preceded in death by four siblings, Ada Mae Gittinger, Iva Berdine Laux, Jeanine Sherman and Milan Lee.

Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Horvath Hanes Funeral Home, 211 N. Broadway St., Green Springs.

His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at the funeral home with Pastor Christine Tobergte officiating. Burial will follow at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Green Springs.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
