Hazel Avis (Digby) Scalf

Hazel Avis (Digby) Scalf, 84, of Tiffin, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012.

She was born Oct. 24, 1928, in Tiffin, to Earl and Caroline (Palmerton) Digby. Hazel graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. It was there that she met her husband, Melvin S. Scalf, and they got married.

After discharging from the Navy, Hazel worked locally in Tiffin, at J.J. Newberry's, Montgomery Ward's, The Commission on Aging and the American Cancer Society. She also attended Tiffin University later in life and graduated with an associate's degree.

Hazel was an active member at First Christian Church, Tiffin, and taught Sunday school there for several years. She also was very active in her community, The Kiwanis Manor. She lived there for more than 25 years and made many great friends. She loved to play bingo, cards and volunteer at the gift shop.

Above all things, Hazel loved spending time with her family. Her family meant everything to her and was her proudest accomplishment.

Hazel is survived by her four sons, Marc (Margaret) Scalf of Bowling Green, Craig (Diane) Scalf of Tiffin, Kevin (Nancy) Scalf of Delphos and Tim (Cheryl) Scalf of Sandusky; her seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three siblings.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Scalf; a daughter, Mia Michelle Scalf; three brothers; and one sister.

Hazel touched so many lives over the course of her own.

To know Hazel was to be loved by her. She will be missed dearly.

Her funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at First Christian Church, Tiffin, with the Rev. Douglas DeVos officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmont Cemetery, Tiffin, with military honors rendered by the United Veterans' Council.

Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-1221 and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
