Hunters group honors officer
Brad Baaske, state wildlife officer assigned to Wyandot County, recently was named Ohio Wildlife Officer of the Year by Shikar-Safari Club International, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
A 29-year veteran of the Division of Wildlife, Baaske began his career working in the wildlife management section in 1984.
Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport.
Sandusky County officer awarded
Brian Bury, state wildlife officer assigned to Sandusky County, has been named Mississippi Flyway Waterfowl Protection Officer of the Year for Ohio by the Mississippi Flyway Council's law enforcement committee, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife.
Bury entered the Wildlife Officer Training Academy in 2002 and has been the state wildlife officer in Sandusky County for nearly 10 years.
The Mississippi Flyway Council recognizes full-time law enforcement officers for "outstanding contributions to the protection of waterfowl."
ODNR proposes hunting seasons
Ohio Wildlife Council has received potential dates for next fall's hunting seasons, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Sept. 1 is the proposed start date for fall squirrel and dove seasons. Upland game hunting seasons for cottontail rabbit, ring-necked pheasant and bobwhite quail are proposed to start Nov. 1, the first Friday in November. Fox, raccoon, skunk, opossum and weasel hunting and trapping are proposed to start Nov. 10.
Youth upland game seasons are proposed statewide for two weekends: Oct. 19-20 and Oct. 26-27.
Proposed 2014 wild turkey season dates are April 21-May 18, and the proposed 2014 youth wild turkey season is April 19-20.
Proposals concerning Ohio's white-tailed deer and fall wild turkey hunting season will be heard at the next Ohio Wildlife Council meeting Feb. 6.
Park looking
for volunteers
Hancock Park District is seeking individuals with an interest in history and willingness to learn to become volunteers for the 1847 McKinnis House in Litzenberg Memorial Woods on US 224, west of Findlay.
Volunteers help during public programs and open houses in early March to mid-December, primarily Sunday afternoons and occasional Saturdays. Volunteer positions include greeters and first-person living history interpreters.
New volunteers, at least age 12, are required to attend a training session 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Discovery Center.
