Columbian Quiz Bowl team competed at the Northern Ohio League Academic Competition Feb. 8, placing first.
The competition at Sandusky High School consisted of seven rounds.
The team from Norwalk placed second. Other teams competing were Sandusky, Bellevue, Shelby, Willard and Ontario.
Coach Len Donaldson said the team is to display the traveling plaque that goes with the victory.
Columbian has won the quiz bowl regular league season and the Seneca/Wyandot/Put-in-Bay/Sandusky tournament, plus the NOL.
"We are very proud of our accomplishment," Donaldson said.
He said the team practices every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 a.m. with students devoting most of their spare time to practicing with hand-outs Donaldson provides.
"We felt, as a team, that we wanted to become a team able to compete at state level," Donaldson said. "In order to do that the students had to put in the extra time. They have, and we are beginning to see that hard work pay off."
The team will be featured on television twice this week. The first is at 9 p.m. Thursday against New Riegel on WBGU's Brain Game. Then, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, the team is to compete against Toledo St. Francis on WNWO's Academic Challenge.
"We will also be preparing for the state tournament to be held on April 20 at Calvert Catholic High School," Donaldson said. "After that we will start getting ready for next year's competitions where we will compete in the two leagues, television tournaments, and hopefully weekend tournaments."
Donaldson said the team is looking for funding for a new buzzer system.
The team is made up of seniors Chris Daniels, Scott Bryant, John Obringer, Tyler Wise and Brandon Berry; juniors Dylan Knaplund and Hunter Stark; sophomores Nate Ramsdell, Katie Repp, Nathaniel Glimer, Erica Schultz, Natalie Howard, Lindsay Gillikin and Grant Reinbolt; and freshmen Robert Klepper, Thomas Bean and Frazier Daniels.
