A group of Bangladeshi graduate students organized the event and shared the history behind the day.
Feb. 21 was declared The International Mother Language Day by UNESCO to recognize the sacrifice made by the martyrs of language movement of Bangladesh. In 1952, police open fired on the peaceful demonstration of students and the public at Dhaka, a city of former East Pakistan, now the capital of Bangladesh. They were protesting against the oppressive declaration of the Pakistani government, which refused the recognition of Bengali, the language of the majority, and stated Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan. Twelve men died in gunfire and more than 95 were injured. It is thought to be the first time in history that people died to protect their mother language.
