Mary E. Gillig, 100, of Fostoria, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Independence House, Fostoria.
She was born April 5, 1912, in Tiffin to Albert and Charlotte (Harter) Zirger. She married Clarence P. Gillig on Nov. 24, 1931, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin and he died in Jan. 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Helen C. (Vernon) Durst, Burgoon, and JoAnn (Roger) Doe, Fostoria; two sons, Thomas E. Gillig, Fostoria, and Michael J. (Peggy) Gillig, Fostoria; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Zirger, Tiffin.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn J. Gillig; three grandsons; two sisters, Helen Zirger and Clara Betz; and three brothers, Louis, Harold and Marcus Zirger.
Mary was a homemaker, a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella and Rosary-Altar Society.
Mary was a very spiritual person; her family referred to her as a "prayer warrior," especially praying for her great-grandsons serving in the military. She dearly loved her family, and will be fondly remembered for the care she provided for her daughter, Marilyn.
Visitation is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hoening Funeral Home, 242 W. Tiffin St., Fostoria, where a Christian wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, where a Rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to St. Wendelin Church and School or a charity of the donor's choice.
