LAKOTA - Monday evening, Lakota Local Schools Board of Education discussed that elementary teachers, kindergarten through fourth grade, are required to obtain a reading endorsement.
This may come as a hurdle for many teachers as the unfunded mandate from the state is to cost about $6,000 per educator. The school district is working to offset these costs by attempting to work with nearby colleges to cut the cost down to make it more affordable for the teachers.
The school board also discussed the Sandusky River League reviewing options to enhance opportunities for athletes through creative scheduling with the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. The Sandusky River League may merge with TAAC and have two divisions. Lakota is looking to revisit talks with TAAC after other schools are contemplating if they would move to a new league.
In other matters, the board:
Announced eigth-grade students are in the process of starting a fundraiser for a field trip to Washington, D.C.
Approved a contract renewal with NWOET for the 2013-2014 school year.
Approved an agreement between the Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Lakota Local School District for the 2013-2014 school year.
