Tiffin University softball split with Lake Superior State on Thursday, winning the opener 7-3, before losing the night cap, 5-4.
In game one, Tiffin (10-14, 4-2 GLIAC) erupted for five runs on six hits and two errors with Madison Yanek and Jena King picking up two hits a piece with Kristin Robinson driving in two.
Amber Young (4-2) held the Lakers (5-8, 3-7 GLIAC) to three runs on five hits while striking out eight over seven innings.
Cassie Brown and Emily Shaw had two hits each in the nightcap for Tiffin. Caitlin Houk doubled to drive in two runs and King drove in two more with her hit.
Yanek (1-3) took the loss by yielding three runs on three hits and walking two more over 4 2/3 innings.
Dragons baseball edged by Lakers
ALLENDALE, Mich. - Senior Ryan Locke hit in his eighth-straight game but Tiffin University still came up a run short in a 9-8 loss to Grand Valley State on Thursday at Laker Baseball Field.
GVSU (14-10, 8-3 GLIAC) had a commanding 5-0 lead after four innings before the Dragons (13-14, 7-5 GLIAC) came roaring back in the fifth. Roger Christensen singled in Colin Sallee. A Ryan Williams single and a Locke walk loaded the bases with two outs. Then the Dragons drew four straight walks to tie the game at five.
Locke singled in the seventh and scored on an error to give Tiffin the 6-5 lead but the Lakers scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Mike Cooperider (1-1) gave up two hits, three runs and walked three others in an inning and a third of work.
