Olympic fencer and entrepreneur Barbra Higgins is to deliver the keynote address during Tiffin University's 2013 commencement.
The ceremony is to begin at 2 p.m. May 4 in the Heminger Center, 350 Miami Street.
Approximately 3,000 people are expected to attend, including about 1,200 graduates representing both undergraduate students and graduate students.
Higgins, originally from Panama, competed in the 1984 Olympic Games. Now living in California, she has achieved success in sports, entertainment and business, and is known for her motivational talk, "Everything Matters."
Higgins was the featured speaker for Tiffin University's November edition of Good Morning World lecture series.
"We were all impressed with her message," said Ron Schumacher, vice president for development and public affairs at TU said.
She has more than 30 years of experience in starting, operating and occasionally selling small businesses. As an internationally acclaimed entrepreneur and attorney, she is CEO/CFO/president for many corporations and community organizations, including VenMundi Inc., a successful Internet entertainment hub.
"She's a great speaker. She will the message of perseverance, the belief in ones self and a 'never say die' attitude," Schumacher said.
Formerly with the CPA firm of Price Waterhouse (now PWC), Higgins was named a presidential appointee to the Small Business Administration National Advisory Council. She is vice president and CFO of the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, and CFO of Monterey Horse Park. She also serves as an executive board member of the Northern California Olympians Alumni Association.
Higgins holds a law degree from the University of Miami and a bachelor's degree from Florida International University.
