The memory of Deacon Dan Scherger will continue to run-on with the help of the sophomore class at Calvert Catholic School through a 5K Color Run.
The inaugural Deacon Color (5K) Walk and Run is to begin at 10 a.m. May 18 in Tiffin's Hedges-Boyer Park.
This run/walk is in memory of Deacon Dan Scherger, who died of a brain tumor almost two years ago.
"Dan (worked) on inspiring kids about service to others and about what it meant to help people who are less fortunate," Calvert Religion teacher Dave Kraft said. "(Dan) was very active in the community. He would serve any fuction that benefitted mankind."
Scherger graduated from Calvert Catholic Schools in 1972 and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Tiffin University in 1994. He was ordained as a deacon in February 1989 and served his entire time as a deacon at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Scherger also taught 7th-grade religion at Calvert.
Sophomore Quinn Kanter was in one of Scherger's last classes before he died.
"Deacon Dan was a good teacher and was always friendly. He would always talk to you and wave to you in the hall," Kanter said.
The event is being organized by Kraft and the sophomore class as a service project.
"We wanted a way to reach people and this is the first color run that Tiffin has had," Kanter said. "It looked like fun and it is for a good cause."
The Deacon Color Run is less about speed and time and more about a "good celebration," Kraft said.
Participants begin the run with white shirts (included with registration) and end with their shirt plastered with colors administered along the route. Each point of the race, individuals will be sprayed with a colorful-dust made from corn starch and washable tempera paints. An alternate route is to be available for those not wanting to be dusted with color.
Kraft said 150-200 people have registered for the run so far.
"I have been getting (atleast) 10 people a day," he said. "People will still be able to register the day of the race, as well."
Refreshments also are to be provided, and prizes and certificates are to be awarded.
Kraft said he has even had people sign up from Michigan and Indianna.
Scherger also worked as the pastoral associate at St. Joseph Catholic Church and at two previous Kroger locations, served as an umpire in various baseball and softball leagues, was a marriage counselor and bereavement counselor and was involved in CCD, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program, Serra Club, Knights of Columbus, Optimist Club and committees at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Kraft said Scherger never drove and could always be seen riding around Tiffin on his bicycle. The students also created posters and brochures of the event with a character of Deacon Dan riding his bike, which is to be used on the T-shirts.
To register, send a $15 entry fee (checks to St. Joseph Church Deacon Color Run) to St. Joseph Church, 36 Melmore St., Tiffin, OH 44883. Include your full name, age, phone number and T-shirt size.
Proceeds are to be used by Tiffin Serra Club for scholarships for altar servers.
