Franklin E. Young

Franklin E. Young, 91, lifelong resident of Lykens Township, passed away at 8:28 a.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Carlisle House, Bucyrus, after a short illness.

Franklin was born Jan. 28, 1922, to Marion and Fairy (Swalley) Young. He graduated from Lykens High School in May 1941. He was the first Lykens FFA member to receive the State Farmer degree. He joined the United States Navy in 1944. He married Martha Marcile "Marty" Lutz July 28, 1945, and she survives. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to Ohio to join his father and grandfather in farming. Franklin also was involved in the drainage contracting business for many years.

Franklin is survived by a sister, Wanda Zeiter; sister-in-law, Phyllis Young; five children, Cecilia (Kent) Zwick of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., Karen Miller of Bloomville, David (Brenda) Young of Lykens, Lynn Utz of Chatfield and Stanley (Trinka Messenheimer) Young of Lykens; 12 grandchildren, Rodney, Shelley and Christopher Miller, Adryan and Brant Zwick, Marc, Brent and Shaun Young, Jeremey and Rob Lutz, Broede Armstrong and Jack Young; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Mary (Shade) Young; two brothers, Dalton and Claude; a sister, Frances; and a son-in-law, Don Miller.

Franklin was a trustee of Lykens Township for many years. He was a former member of the Lykens Volunteer Fire Department and Lykens Conservation League. He was a member of Seneca Lodge F&AM, Bloomville, and also the Cornelia Chapter OES, Bloomville. He was also a life member of St. John's Baseline United Church of Christ, Bloomville.

A funeral for Franklin will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at St. John's Baseline United Church of Christ, Bloomville, with the Rev. Cathy Wirth officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Baseline Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday at Walton-Moore Funeral Home, Sycamore, where Masonic services will begin at 8 p.m.
