About 60 people gathered Tuesday afternoon at The Salvation Army as the church broke ground for an addition and renovations to their headquarters at 505 E. Market St.
Captain PB Stetzer led a prayer and offered opening remarks.
"When we came here, we heard about how they got this building and got it ready but we realized we needed more. After a lot of time praying and raising money and waiting for the right time and the right people, today we are finally ... ready to break ground on Phase 2 of our project," he said.

Seneca County Commissioner Jeff Wagner (left) and Captain Becky Stetzer discuss The Salvation Army projects Tuesday.
Captain Becky Stetzer read a list of the companies that are to contribute to the project and introduced The Salvation Army Advisory Board and other dignitaries who were present. She said the renovations include transforming the chapel into three classrooms, and she pointed out a cordoned-off area next to the existing building.
"This space here will become our new donation spot. There will no longer be that big garage door for you," Becky said. "We will be bringing the front of the building out. We are going to have a new office suite in there and use the space where our offices are now for a foyer to our brand new sanctuary, which will go in where donations are being taken now."
With that, the ground breaking ceremony took place, followed by benediction and a reception. The Salvation Army expects to have an open house and dedication later this year when the project is finished.
