Boy Scout Troop 443

Boy Scout Pack 443 had a crossover ceremony May 20 at First Presbyterian Church. Four Webelos, including Lane Irving, Scott Boyd, James Phillips and Tyler Keefe, crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 443.

Cemetery lot owners to meet

The annual Pleasant Ridge (Egbert's) Cemetery meeting is at 10 a.m. June 2 at Pleasant Ridge Church, SR 101. All lot owners are encouraged to attend.

Church to host barbecue

Trinity United Church of Christ, McCutchenville, is hosting a chicken barbecue featuring Harlan's BBQ chicken from 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m. June 9. Adults meal tickets are $8 and kids are $4.

The barbeque is a pre-sale ticket event and the deadline to purchase tickets is June 2. Tickets can be purchased at the church office, by calling (419) 981-5808 or by email at trinityuss@bright.net.

Fundraiser

Wal-Mart sponsors charity golf outing

Wal-Mart is to sponsor a golf outing to benefit Children's Miracle Nework June 5 at Fostoria Country Club, Fostoria.

The event is to feature a four-player scramble at 9 a.m., with check-in at 8 a.m. The cost is $50 per player, which includes breakfast buffet 7-9 a.m. Lunch also is to be provided.

The event also includes prizes and events including a $300 putting callenge and raffle tickets are to be on sale.

Sunday hours end for summer

Starting today, the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is to be closed Sundays throughout the summer.

The next open Sunday will be Sept. 8.

The library is to be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day and will reopen Tuesday with regular hours.

Adult reading program begins

The Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is beginning the adult summer reading program, "Groundbreaking Reads" Saturday.

The program is free and open to all adults and will run until July 31.

Participants are to fill out a raffle ticket for every book or eBook they read and are entered to win a grand prize.

The final drawing will be Aug. 1.

Summer listening program begins

The Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is to kick of the summer listening program, "U Need 2 Listen" June 1.

The program is free and open to all adults and will run until July 31.

Participants are asked to register at the library's information desk and will receive a free pair of ear buds.

Teen reading program to begin

The teen department at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is kicking off the summer reading program "Beneath the Surface" with a kickoff party at 4 p.m. June 3.

A "Schools Out Movie" will be featured at 5:30 p.m. The film featured will be "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

As part of the program, the teen department is to host a creative writing contest. Entries can be fiction or non-fiction, 500 words, and are due by June 29. The contest is open to grades 6-12.

The program is free and open to all teens. Registration begins Saturday.

Junior department program starts

The junior department at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library is kicking off its summer reading program, "Dig Into Reading," June 4.

The first of the series will be "Messy Tuesday's" 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Frost Kalnow room.

The library is to host "P.T. Reptiles" at 4 p.m. June 6 in the Adult Reading room.

The program is free and is to run until July 31.

New reading program for babies

The junior department at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library has announced a new summer reading program for babies starting Saturday called "The Rubber Ducky Club."

The program lasts eight weeks and is open to children ages birth to 35 months. The program is to last until July 31.

Play program set

The junior department at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library will host "Let's Move!" at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. June 18 in the Frost Kalnow room.

The program is open to children from birth through kindergarten. Participants play and listen to music, perform fingerplays and listen to new stories.

No registration is required.

New titles at Mohawk library

SYCAMORE - Mohawk Community Library is to add new fiction and non-fiction titles from authors Ace Atkins, Carolyn Hart, Charles Martin, Stephen Coonts, John Sanford, Sherryl Woods, Suzanne Brockman, Warren Fahy, Kat Martin, Amanda Knox, Gary O'Neal, and David Fisher, Charles Graeber and Jackie Hance.

Campus closed for holiday

Owens Community College campuses in Toledo and Findlay are to be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

Classes will resume and administrative offices will open Tuesday.

TU professor earns master's degree

Teresa Collins, associate professor of education at Tiffin University, was conferred a master of arts degree in English from Morehead State University May 11.

Local performs in wind ensemble

FINDLAY - Ryan Wood, 2010 graduate from Hopewell-Loudon High School, performed in The University of Findlay's symphonic band and wind ensemble spring concert.

Wood is a senior animal science/pre-veterinary medicine major. He is the son of Roger and Charlene Wood of Tiffin.

Local named to dean's list

COLUMBUS - Peter Kin of Tiffin was named to the spring semester 2013 dean's list at Ohio Dominican University.

Nurses get pinned

More than 80 Owens Community College students were bestowed honorary pins by the nursing department for academic achievements specific to registered nursing.

Local students receiving pins were Katie Alford and Judith Ruhlen, both of Tiffin; Charity De La Cruz, Linda Green and Lacie Pace, all of Fostoria; Jamie Schmidt of Upper Sandusky; Matthew Lortz of Carey; and Crystal Mathias of Bloomville.

Small business basics seminars set for June

FREMONT -The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra State Community College is offering free, two-hour seminars called "Small Business Basics."

Owens organizes backpack drive

FINDLAY -Owens Community College's Alumni Association is to organize a gently-used backpack drive called "Backpack to the Future," to provide backpacks for students.

In addition, individuals can donate other school supplies including crayons, glue, pencils and tissues.

V-S board meeting schedule amended

The Vanguard-Sentinel Career and Technology Centers Board of Education has amended its meeting schedule.

The regular June meeting has been moved to June 27. The July 18 meeting has been canceled and the regular schedule is to resume Aug. 15.

NCOESC gets auditor award

The fiscal team of North Central Ohio Educational Service Center recently was awarded an Auditor of State Award from Auditor of State David Yost.

Preparing for fall

Students are getting ready for the 2013-14 school year at Tiffin Middle School by scheduling classes. Tentative class schedules are to be received in early August.

A formal orientation will be given parents and students of incoming fifth graders in August.

Retiring teachers

Several teachers at Tiffin Middle School are to retire at the end of the school year, including Joyce Gibson, life skills; Stacey Kiesel, physical education; Sue Shank, eighth grade math; Curt King, choir; and Mike Fansler, guidance counselor.

Seaman Recruit Kenneth G. Brown

Navy Seaman Recruit Kenneth G. Brown, son of Beth A. Wertz of Sycamore and Bobby G. Brown, of McCutchenville, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

During the eight-week program, Brown completed training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

Brown is a 2007 graduate of Mohawk High School.
