Charles D. Gunter

Charles "Red" D. Gunter, 90, of Tiffin, passed away Sunday evening, May 26, 2013, at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center.

He was born Dec. 16, 1922, in Spartanburg, S.C., to Clarence and Bonnie (Hurst) Gunter. He married Phyllis M. Fraley March 15, 1945, in Spartanburg.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; two children, Betty "Becky" Gunter-Mouradian of Tiffin and Charles Gunter, II, of Cincinnati; a daughter-in-law, Abby Gunter; two granddaughters, Rebekah Gwen Gunter of Cincinnati and Emily Van Curan of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five step grandchildren, Eric Mouradian and Tonya DeBold of Washington Courthouse, Leslie Stanton-Shook of Tiffin, Laurie Stanton-Dennis of Massillion, and Scott Stanton of Concord, N.C.; 10 step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, John, Clarence and Roy; and a son-in-law, Robert Mouradian.

Red came to Tiffin at the age of 6 to be raised at the JR. OUAM National Home. He was captain of the basketball and football teams, and was the valuable player of the winning football teams in 1939, 1940 and 1941. He graduated in 1942. Red was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy who served during World War II in the South Pacific. After retiring from Gray's Printing, Fostoria, he spent many hours on the golf course, and was proud to have two holes-in-one. He was an active member of the Lions Club International, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 94, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 402. Red was a faithful servant of the Lord and attended First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. The family would like to extend special thanks to the Autumnwood Care Center staff for their friendship and care.

Friends may visit with the family from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 2016 S. CR 19, Tiffin, OH 44883.

The memorial service is 10 a.m., Saturday, June 1, at the church, with the Rev. Doug DeVos officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmont Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the United Veterans Council.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Tthe Lions Club or Autumnwood Care Center.
