Brayden Chester, a student at Mohawk Elementary School, is about to celebrate his 8th birthday. Instead of a party, though, the young man is organizing Brayden's Birthday Walk for Sheri at 2 p.m. July 14 at Hedges-Boyer Park.
The event is to feature 1K and 5K runs to show support for a relative, Sheri Myers, who is fighting colon cancer.
Amy Chester, Brayden's mother, said Myers was diagnosed earlier this year. Myers' father and mother also had been diagnosed with cancer shortly before their daughter. Amy said she and Brayden were sitting on the couch one night when the boy offered to do a benefit for Myers.
"He said, 'Mom, for my birthday, I want to do a walk for Sheri.' He wanted to help, so I thought not many 7-year-olds probably think, for their birthday, about wanting to help other people," Amy said. "It was his idea."
Surgery was not an option for Myers because of other health issues, but she told Amy the chemotherapy has reduced the size of the cancerous tissue. Because Myers is unable to work, Amy had done two other fundraisers for her by donating profits from sales of home business products.
Amy said Myers plans to be present to visit with walkers, and Brayden plans to sit with her during the event.
"I'm glad that my son, being the age that he is, is willing to help others," she added.
Registration for the walk is $10 for those who register by Friday. On race day, the cost is $12. Registration is to open at 1:15 p.m. in the Amvets Shelter, across from the YMCA. Door prizes are to be awarded and a raffle is to be conducted. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5.
