June S. Woods, 88, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in Northfield, Minn., where she had resided since 2009.
She was born Dec. 1, 1924, in Chicago, to John and Theresa Skokane, and they are deceased.
After graduation from Calvert High School in 1943, she joined the Women's Marine Corps. After World War II, she moved to Colorado, where she married W.H. Woods in 1948.
They raised three sons and June taught in Glenwood Springs for 30 years. When Howard died in 1976, she joined the Peace Corps and served in Botswana and Liberia. Later, she taught in Tonga in the South Pacific. After returning to Colorado, she taught at Colorado Mountain College, Glenwood Springs until well into her 80s. She often wrote features for The Denver Post and a book, "Time Out," about her years in the Peace Corps.
June is survived by her three sons, Bill (Marilyn) Woods of Durango, Colo., Jeff (Teresa) Woods of Northfield, Minn., and Scott (Amelia) Woods of Laporte, Colo.; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Shirley Skokane and Lorraine Meisner, both of Tiffin.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Skokane.
