CAREY - Carey school board approved a five-year contract with Mike Wank to become the new superintendent for the district during its meeting Monday.
Wank comes to Carey after 15 years of serving as superintendent for Seneca East school district. Wank plans to split his time between the two districts until he begins full time at Carey Sept. 1 with an annual salary of $105,000.
Wank said he really enjoyed his time at Seneca East and has seen a lot of progress for that district including a new campus and technology advancements. He said he hopes to bring the same to Carey.
Wank said he and Carey's previous superintendents, Mark Vehre and Ray Funk, always were supportive of each other and he added that Funk served as a mentor to him when he began his superintendent career.
"We've had a long line of good superintendents at Carey and I hope to carry that forward as much as possible," Wank said.
The board thanked previous superintendent Vehre for his 29 years of service.
In other news, a one-year limited teaching contract was approved for Kelsey Chun, elementary art, for the 2013-14 school year.
The board approved lunch prices for the 2013-14 school year: elementary, $2.15; high school, $2.45; adult, $2.75; breakfast, $1.75; milk, 40 cents. Participation in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for the school year also was approved.
The board also:
Approved make-up days as Feb.17, April 17, May 30 and additional days to be added at the end of the school year if necessary.
Approved Emily McCartney as a substitute aide and secretary.
Approved Autumn Harley as junior high cheerleading coach and Susan Damschroder as seventh-grade volleyball coach for the 2013-14 school year.
Approved volunteer coaches Kevin Kreh and Lora Vehre, cross country; Tim Baldrige, Joe Clinger, Derek Stock and Doug Weaver, football; and Merced Hernandez and Lewis Troiano, junior high football.
Approved 2013-14 student fees.
Approved elementary and high school student handbooks and the athletic code of ethics for the 2013-14 school year.
Approved a contract with Tri-Rivers Educational Computer Association for professional development and technical support services from Aug. 15 to May 31.
Accepted a $150 donation from the Recycle Committee at Continental Structural Plastics.
The board will next meet Aug. 20.
