We haven't had a soaking downpour for several days in a row. Winter weather is months away.
Sure, hurricane season extends through November. But the only real hassle northwest Ohio residents have in the near term is a flurry of mosquitoes and a blizzard of leaves, right?
Recall that out of the 48 tornadoes that struck Ohio in 2010, 13 hit in September and 15 in October. The only other months in doubles digits was June, with 14.
Plus, household disasters such as fires can strike anytime. So it's a good idea to have a family disaster plan in place all the time.
Don't know where to start? The American Red Cross can help. A free Be Red Cross Ready program is planned for 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Fostoria Fire Department. Those who attend can develop a family disaster plan and get emergency preparedness tips. Also, families can take home a free tote bag with preparedness information, a smoke alarm and a first aid kit.
"Having a game plan in place is essential for all households so everyone knows what they should do when an emergency occurs," stated Todd James, executive director of the Red Cross in our area.
In the meantime, folks can assemble an emergency preparedness kit in an easy-to-carry container that someone can use at home or take with them in case they have to evacuate. It should contain a three-day supply of water (one gallon, per person, per day), nonperishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a 7-day supply of medications, a multi-purpose tool, sanitation and personal hygiene items and copies of important personal documents.
The Red Cross also recommends having at least two weeks worth of supplies at home. The Red Cross Store has items available for someone's kit, ranging from a hand-crank radio to a fully stocked deluxe emergency preparedness kit.
Smart phone users can download the free American Red Cross First Aid app so they'll have information on hand about what to do for everyday emergencies.
