Lakota Girls Cross Country

September 1, 2013
The Advertiser-Tribune

Coach: Don Windom, 26th year.

2012: Eighth in MAL.

Returning letterwinners: Seniors Morgan Mowry; Cariss Reese; Taylor Smith; Barb Sprauer.

Others: Sophomores Andrea Bordner; Miranda Coleman; Alexis Feathers; McKenna Harrison; Andrea Hickle; Hailey Overmyer. Freshmen Kim Boyer; Saraya Durst; Amanda Lane.

Outlook: It's mature experience and a lot of youth this year for the Raiders as they try to better last season's league finish.

"That is a concern because we have the four seniors and they all lettered last year, but a couple of those seniors were pretty far back," Windom said. "We're hoping we can get a few of the others to mix in the top five.

"It's a work in progress and they're back a ways," he said.

But that's a step ahead of where they were two years ago. Last season's effort came on the heels of the Raiders not even fielding a full team in 2011.

But one Raider who weathered that year and has continually shined for Lakota is Reese.

The former state-qualifier claimed fourth in the district last season and returns as the reigning individual MAL champion for her final year on the course for the Raiders, and Windom looks for more of the same this fall.

"It's been a pleasure. Cariss this year has really prepared herself over the summer. She has been really diligent to get in the miles," he said. "She's just looking real strong right now. She's a competitive girl and she's ready to give it a try.

"When you have someone running that far up in a race, you're really only counting four spots," Windom said. "We're just hoping that our experience can bring us up a bit."
