Two years ago, Heidelberg University alumnus John Beale donated to Beeghly Library a large personal collection of about 300 books on opera and classical music recordings, many of them autographed by composers, conductors and performers. Sunday, the School of Music is to express its appreciation for the collection with an opera gala concert in Beale's honor.
With the theme "What's Opera, Doc?" the concert features a series of operatic gems. It is to be staged at 3 p.m. in Brenneman Music Hall on campus Admission is free.
The concert is being coordinated by Heidelberg voice professor Carol Dusdieker and alumna Donna Overholt, advisory board member and treasurer of Friends of Heidelberg Music.
Featured performers are Dusdieker, piano professor Margarita Denenberg, School of Music accompanist Cynthia Ramsdell and guest soloists Benjamin Bunsold and Katherine Calcamuggio.
The program begins with four selections from Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte." Other familiar operas represented include "L'elisir d'amore," "Romeo and Juliette," "Lakme," "La Perichole," "Rigoletto," "La forza del Destino," "La Boheme" and "Die Fledermaus."
