Zion plans 175th celebration
REPUBLIC - The 175th anniversary celebration of Zion Lutheran Church, 3959 CR 21, Republic is set for Sunday. The Rev. Marcus Lohrmann, bishop of NW Ohio Synod, is to preach at the 10 a.m. service, and a dinner is to follow.
The congregation dates back to 1838, when many settlers in the area were German-speaking of Lutheran and Reformed faith. The first church was built of logs and was finished in 1846 on land purchased for $16.62. A new church was built in 1885 for $2,800.
Author to speak at area churches
John R. Wood is to speak in at three area venues this week. The author of "Ordinary Lives: Extraordinary Mission," Wood is trying to encourage Christians to accomplish much in their everyday activities by putting God first. The programs in Bellevue and Attica are free.
* Monday at 7 p.m., Wood is to present "Rediscover the Mission" at St. Gaspar Parish in Bellevue.
* "Rediscover the Faith" is Wood's program for 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gaspar.
* Our Lady of Hope in Attica is the venue for "Setting the World Ablaze" 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
* A longer program is planned for 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Michael Parish on Bright Road, Findlay. Wood is to cover the five steps to winning the war within. The musical duo, Simply RC, is to provide music. Tickets are $20, which includes book, program materials and refreshments. Series to focus on 'Women in the Bible'
Judette Kolansky is to lead a three-part series of classes on "Women in the Bible" at St. Francis Spirituality Center in Tiffin. The morning class is 10-11:30 a.m. Oct. 24, 31 and Nov. 7. The evening class is 6:30-8 p.m. the same dates. The cost for the series is $20. Those who have Bibles should bring them. Extra Bibles are to be available. To register, call (419) 443-1485.
Peace activist coming to the area
International activist Kathy Kelly is to be in Ohio for three presentations later this month. Sponsored by Project Peace and Tiffin Area Pax Christi, she is to present "Reflections on Warfare in Afghanistan and Gaza" at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in Elizabeth Schaefer Auditorium, 190 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin. Kelly also is to speak at 7 p.m. Oct. 25 at St. Bernardine Home in Fremont. Oct. 27, she is to be at University of Toledo Law School for a 6 p.m. program.
The Nobel Peace Prize-nominee recently returned from one of her 12 trips to Afghanistan, and she is to share the stories of families she lived with. Kathy has traveled to many war zones and documented heartbreaking stories of families that were affected by war. She has been working with a group called Afghan Peace Volunteers.
A free will offering is to be taken for Kelly's work.
The Babbs to perform in Norwalk
NORWALK - Maple City Church of God, 40 Cline St., Norwalk, is to host The Babbs of Bellevue beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 in the sanctuary.
