NEW RIEGEL - Over the course of a basketball game, there are certain formulas that will just about always result in a win.
* Be shooting the double bonus by the end of the first quarter. Check.
* Have three players finish with double-doubles, and a fourth score in double figures. Check.
New?Riegel’s Taylor Arbogast shoots over Galion’s Raven Crawford during Monday’s game in New Riegel.
* Force your opponent into as many turnovers as shots attempted. Check.
New Riegel accomplished all of them, and it added up to a lopsided 74-37 victory over Galion.
"I thought we played hard," New Riegel coach Steve Lucius said. "We had a lot of shots, shot attempts. We used a lot of kids, a lot of kids got experience. We worked on a lot of different things. We saw things we need to continue to strive to get better at, and quickly, because were right back in the MAL on Thursday at Mohawk."
Galion played the Blue Jackets close midway through the first quarter, trailing only 10-7. Then fouls and turnovers began to pile up and New Riegel went on a 16-0 run stretching into the second quarter.
Taylor Arbogast got New Riegel rolling with 10 first-quarter points. Taylor Kirian had seven in the first half and Hailey Theis scored six as the lead escalated to a 38-15 Blue Jacket advantage at the break.
In the first half, New Riegel forced Galion into 30 turnovers compared to only 13 shot attempts.
"I think one of our best points is our defense," New Riegel's Lauren Ladd said. "We always work on it as hard as we possibly can at practice. (Lucius) really pushes on defense and we really try to do our best on defense. It's our strong point."
Lucius was pleased with how his defense played, but felt his team could've done a better job converting those turnovers into points.
"We used some various types of pressure. It's good, but I don't think we capitalized on as many of those as we could've," he said. "Certainly not going to complain; our defense forced 30 turnovers, that's the good part. On the other side, we missed some makable shots. We need to clean that up, finish that stuff."
Kara Scherger had seven steals while Arbogast and Morgan Noftz each took six.
While the defense was tough, Galion coach Bryce Lehman said his team was making far too many mistakes
"The way we played was just terrible," he said. "I got three seniors on the court, you would think they were freshmen. Stupid passes, off-the-wall shots, not squaring up. Stuff we preach every day. Every day, all the time. They get, I don't know, scared, psyched out, whatever they want to get. It's just becoming a reoccurring theme. I told them in the locker room, I'll play underclassmen, I don't care. If we're going to get beat by 20, 30, 40, 50 points, I'll go with underclassmen because they got time to prepare for the future. We'll see how they respond."
In the third quarter, Galion began holding onto the ball better, getting shots off. But it didn't translate into points as the Tigers missed their first 12 attempts of the period, getting outscored 19-5 in the frame.
Ladd finished with game-highs in points (13) and rebounds (14). Kirian shared the scoring high with 13 points of her own and added 10 rebounds. The two teamed to make a dominate presence inside that Galion couldn't contain.
"Me and Taylor a lot of times look for each other, especially on high-low [plays]," Ladd said. "We're always looking for each other and trying to get good position and hoping to get the ball in there."
Arbogast was the third Blue Jacket registering a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
"The two Taylors and Lauren Ladd work together well," Lucius said. "They look for each other. We had a height advantage we tried to exploit, and did a pretty good job with it."
Theis finished with 12 points and Leah Bouillon came off the bench to added eight points. Noftz dished out a team-high six assists.
"Every kid scored, I think," Lucius said. "It's good to get them that varsity experience, because we do have four seniors. You're always looking to build that program, build that future."
New Riegel improves to 10-1 while Galion drops to 1-8.
