Instead of retiring old vehicles, Seneca County Agency Transportation is to sell two of its vans in a public, online auction using GovDeals.com.
SCAT Executive Director Susan Phillips said the agency typically sells its used vehicles for scrap, but after a suggestion from other county agencies, SCAT is to sell the vehicles on the online auction website for the first time.
"We wanted something that was simple for us and that was open to the public and it was fair," she said. "And this took care of that."
Phillips said although the vehicles are no longer in use with SCAT, they are well maintained. She also said SCAT can only have a certain amount of vehicles.
"Even though these vehicles all work, we've got to get rid of vehicles because we get a grant every year to replace three vehicles," Phillips said.
Kelly Hammond, manager of SCAT's billing and accounts receivable, said she expected organizations such as churches to purchase the vehicles. Instead, the agency is getting interest from families with handicapped family members.
With the change in interest, Phillips hopes the vehicles will be purchased by a private entity.
"Our hope is that it's somebody local that has a need for a vehicle like that," she said.
At this time, SCAT is selling a 2004 Ford E-Series Van E350 Super Duty Extended and 2005 Ford E-Series Van E350 Super Duty on the online auction. Both vehicles were maintained every 3,000 miles and include a Braun wheelchair lift.
To find the auction, visit www.govdeals.com and search for Seneca County Agency Transportation.
The auction ends Friday.
