MARIETTA - In a must-win game, Heidelberg got off to a great start, scoring five runs over the first two innings.
But Heidelberg's pitchers continued to struggle, and Baldwin Wallace prevailed.
The Yellow Jackets bashed 17 hits of HU pitching, scored six runs in the third inning and advanced in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 13-11 win.
Heidelberg, which came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed and the No. 13 team in Division III, was the first team eliminated from the four-team tourney. The Student Princes have now lost four straight games, and will have to wait until later this weekend to find out if they receive an at-large bid to the Division III regionals.
If not, Thursday will have marked the final game for Matt Palm as Heidelberg coach. Palm is stepping down at the end of the season.
Heidelberg (31-11) got homers from Alex Grove and Eric Monroe. Grove had three hits and drove in three runs.
Mark Zimmerman homered for BW, while Brad Gugliotta drove in four runs.
Kyle Fluharty (5-3) started for Heidelberg, and lasted 2 1/3 innings. He allowed seven runs, five earned, and took the loss.
"We played from behind all week," Palm said in a release. "But every guy we put out there played as hard as he could. We didn't pitch as well as we have and we made a few timely errors, but we kept battling until the end."
As for the possibility of making it to regionals, Palm said HU has earned a look.
"Of our 11 losses, all but one have come against regionally ranked opponents," he said. "You never want to leave it up to the selection committee, but I think we have done enough to merit consideration."
