Although the weather forecast hasn't been cooperative, we are in the middle of Bike to Work Week. It culminates Friday in National Bike to?Work Day.
While the continual threat of thunderstorms isn't conducive to commuting by bicycle, the fact remains more than half the U.S. population works within five miles of their homes, making riding to work feasible, according to the League of American Bicyclists.
That, plus the health, environmental and economic benefits, help explain why bicycle commuting grew by 47 percent from 2000 to 2011, the league states.
More good news: Ohio Department of Public Safety statistics show injury accidents involving bicyclists dropped by 21 percent last year. Ohio roads are getting safer for bicyclists.
That takes a cooperative effort. Drivers should watch for riders, and riders should watch for motor vehicles.
