Joseph S. Burns

Joseph S. Burns, 98, of Marion, passed away at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Presidential Center, Marion.

He was born Dec. 10, 1915, in Allen County, to Willard and Beulah (Dunlap) Burns. Joseph married Marie E. Mahoney Sept. 3, 1937, in Tiffin, and she preceded him in death Dec. 3, 2002, in Marion.

The former Tiffin resident graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 1934. He was a dedicated member of Central Christian Church, where he served as an elder, a deacon, former trustee and was a member of the Chapel Class. Joseph was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 77, Tiffin, where he held council and chapter degrees, a member of Pleasant Senior Center and past member of the Marion Industrial Club. He thoroughly enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, working in his tomato garden, growing roses, woodworking and playing cards.

The highlight of each year was the family fishing trip to Canada for two weeks, which they did for more than 20 years together. Joseph was employed for 10 years with Webster Manufacturing, Tiffin, and in 1948 moved to Marion. He was employed for 33 years as a draftsman/lead checker with Fairfield Engineering before retiring in 1982.

Joseph was a dedicated father and grandfather and is survived by two sons, Bruce Burns of Marion and Carl (Sue) Burns of Hot Springs, Arkansas; a daughter, Cindy Nickolson of Bexley; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, William Burns; two brothers; and two sisters.

He went out of his way to help anyone and did not know a stranger.

Friends may call from 9:30-11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, at Central Christian Church, 421 Mt. Vernon Ave., Marion. Pastor Marilyn Winters will conduct the service at 11 a.m.

Burial will take place at 2:15 p.m. Monday at Fairmont Cemetery, Tiffin.

Donations may be made to Central Christian Church Memorial Fund in Joseph's name.
