NEW RIEGEL - New Riegel council members heard Tuesday night Shelly Co. from Findlay was awarded the contract to repave SR 587 and CR 591 through the village. The total bid for the project was $230,843 which does not include the village receiving the grindings for enlarging the parking area at the park.
The village is to receive a $125,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission toward the project. Work soon is to begin, and the project is to be complete before school starts.
Council approved allowing any resident interested in having their alleyway paved at their own expense while the equipment is in the village may contact Councilman Dale Nye for specifics.
Les Staib, council's representative on the NBS Joint Ambulance District board, said the newly formed board, which includes Big Spring Township trustee Steve Schalk and Seneca Township trustee Jim Faber, has approved a resolution of necessity to place a 1.25-mill levy on the Nov. 4 ballot to provide a stipend for the volunteer EMTs on the EMS squad.
Street worker Leon Weinandy has been cleaning catch basins filled with grass clippings. Council asks residents to not blow their clippings into the streets.
Police Chief Steve Swartzmiller reminded residents to remove inoperable autos from their properties, cut noxious weeds and generally clean up. Non-compliance may result in a fine.
Councilman Jim Bodart reported the bleachers at the park have been completed. Total for the treated lumber was $785 from Republic Lumber. They are to be painted in time for tournaments.
Councilman Lenny Theis said the Ball Association is purchasing a solar scoreboard for the park at a cost of $7,000 to be erected in the autumn. He said they are considering the purchase of fencing along the ball field.
Theis again has added chemicals to the village fire pond.
Councilwoman Deirdre Bakies said Jeff Finn from U.S. Fish and Wildlife program has seeded the grasses and wildflowers at the park natural wildlife habitat. The stone path soon is to be done and trees are to be planted in the fall.
In other matters, council:
Approved the resolution accepting the 2015 budget, waiving the three reading rule.
Approved paying $3,500 to Kusmer and Assoc., engineers for the paving project.
Approved a $40 payment for membership in the Ohio Mayors Association.
Approved a $50 payment for members in the Municipal Financial Officers Association of Ohio.
Moved to change the payroll date from the 15th of the month to the 30th for OPERS payments for the mayor, fiscal officer, police chief and solicitor.
Agreed to pay $185 for Bureau of Workers Compensation.
Approved Adam Faeth repairing a 12-inch tile near All Saints Parish, not to exceed $500.
Announced a community meeting at noon Aug. 7 at New Riegel Caf to discuss new post office hours.
Council is to meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 19.
