OLD FORT - Old Fort Board of Education hired a new high school principal Wednesday morning during a special meeting.
Kimberly Swartz is to begin as Old Fort Local Schools' 7-12 principal for the 2014-15 school year with a two-year contract.
The board approved the appointment as a quorum with Vice President Lindsay Sooy and members Jay Pence and Kristen Woodall. President Gary Cole and board member Larry Bowman were not present.
Swartz began her career at Old Fort as an English teacher in 1995, teaching for five years, and then moved to Clyde High School, where she had been since.
"I had commented to several people at Old Fort's July 14 board meeting that I would love to come back to Old Fort as an administrator," Swartz said.
The previous high school principal, Shane Jacoby, tendered his letter of resignation last week. Jacoby has been with Old Fort for two years, Superintendent Steve Anway said.
Anway said Jacoby has accepted a position as dean of students in the Lakota Local School district.
Swartz said she did not hesitate to apply when the position became available.
This is to be Swartz's first administrative position.
Anway said the district feels she is ready and will be a good fit for the district.
"We, as a district, feel she will bring an air of excitement to the school and staff," Anway said.
"The community, the students and staff are what makes Old Fort a great place to be," Swartz said. "They have tradition and continue to work hard to maintain excellence. It really is an admirable district.
"Since I started my teaching career at Old Fort, it is like coming home."
Swartz said she is focusing on year one right now.
"I would like to help bring about a smooth transition with unity and stability as Old Fort and Bettsville combine," she said. "I would like also to lead my staff through the Ohio (Teacher Evaluation System) process, as it will be a new evaluation system for them this year."
Swartz also said she would like to continue the tradition of Old Fort's excellence by being an "instructional leader and keeping student achievement at the forefront."
