Court advocate gives kids a voice

TIFFIN — Local leader Marisa Huss, who serves as director of marketing at the Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce and Destination Seneca County, also volunteers her time as a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Huss began her journey with CASA with the knowledge that "children involved in difficult situations often lack a voice of their own." "I love being a CASA because my sole focus is the best interest of the child — nothing else," she said. "It doesn't matter what the lawyers think or what other parties want — what matters is what's truly best for the child. Being a CASA allows me to be that steady, active voice for children who need it most. "Knowing I can help make a difference during what is often an unfamiliar, scary and confusing time for a child drives me to keep going," she said. The training Marisa received as a new volunteer was a pivotal moment in her journey. It equipped her with the skills and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of her role. "The training not only built my confidence but also introduced me to some incredible people who have become a strong source of support and inspiration in my journey," Huss said. Volunteering with CASA has had a profound impact on her personal and professional life. It has broadened her perspective on the challenges faced by people in her community and influenced the way she makes decisions. "I now pay closer attention to the ways our world and community may unintentionally harm children — and I look for ways to create change that empowers them," Huss shared. "The children we advocate for aren't in these situations because of anything they've done wrong. They are our future, and by supporting them now, we're helping shape strong, compassionate leaders for tomorrow." Balancing her volunteer responsibilities with other aspects of her life has been a natural process for Huss. Involved with several organizations and boards while working full-time, she prioritizes what matters most and what she is truly passionate about. "Being a CASA is something I deeply care about, so making space for it in my schedule felt natural," she explained. Her approach to finding balance is about knowing her limits and planning to give her best effort to everything she commits to. Her advice to potential volunteers is simple: take the first step and learn more about CASA. "Stop by the office, talk to the staff, attend an info session — and if you can, hear directly from a CASA child whose life was changed by a volunteer," she said.
