VIDEO: Burdine jail surveillance

Surveillance video obtained by the Register from the day Craig Burdine was brought to the Sandusky County jail suggests Burdine was unresponsive during the 30 minutes leading up to his death.Click the player below to watch the surveillance video That appears in contrast to written statements prepared immediately after he died by the Fremont police officers and sheriff's deputies who were with him just before he collapsed and stopped breathing.There are gaps at key points of the encounter in the audio portion of the surveillance video, however, from two security cameras at the jail. Other video is from a police cruser that transported Burdine to the jail. Burdine does not appear to utter a recognizable word througout the ordeal. He is breathing heavily, situated in the back of the cruiser in which he is being transported, with the time on the screen starting at 3:29:28 a.m.Watch Between the Lines Live at noon Thursday with guests Dr. Michael Baden and Jess Burdine, Craig Burdine's fatherOnce at the jail's sallyport, the officers and guards attempt to coax Burdine, who remains non-responsive. An officer can be heard saying, "Unclench your arms," and a moment later, "Craig? Craig?"Then — eight minutes after the start of the video — the audio goes silent for the next 11 minutes, just moments after the officers and guards pull Burdine from the police cruiser and carry him into the jail holding his arms and legs up with Burdine's back parallel and close to the floor.They can be seen entering a hallway inside the jail carrying Burdine into a room. The sound returns for a minute the goes silent again through most of the remainder of the video. The video ends at 3:57:45 a.m., according to the time stamp on the screen, with Burdine's body being carried to the ambulance outside what appears to be a main entrance at the jail.The officers and jail guards alleged Burdine was being combative and kicked at one officer and also spit. They also photographed their alleged injuries.
