Area seniors recognized at the National Machinery Citizenship Awards

OLD FORT — Over 70 area high school seniors were recognized Monday evening during the 63rd annual National Machinery Citizenship Awards at Old Fort High School. Schools represented included Hopewell-Loudon High School, Mohawk High School, New Riegel High School, Old Fort High School and Seneca East High School. The National Machinery Citizenship awards are designed to recognize those high school students who display good citizenship, conduct, proper attitude and conscientiousness during their high school year. "This time is for you," John Davoli, director of NCORcog at the NCOESC, said to the students. "We believe you will go forward and make a positive impact in your adult life." Elaine Daugherty, regional leader at Edward Jones Financial, served as the event's keynote speaker. Daugherty is an Old Fort High School graduate who went on to attend the University of Toledo earning a degree in finance. She became a financial advisor in 2005 with Edward Jones and later a certified financial planner. She now resides over 80 branch teams. Daugherty said citizenship is a noun, but should be seen as a verb. "Citizenship is a way to be," she said. During her talk, Daugherty discussed nine characteristics of making a good citizen; be compassionate, being a good neighbor, follow rules and laws, respect the rights of others, be informed about the world, respect the property of others, take responsibility for your actions; protect the environment; and volunteer. "These nine characteristics are not the end-all-be-all, but are a great place to start," Daugherty said. "Live your life to the fullest potential. Looking out at all of you, I am ensured that we all are in good hands." During the event, the National Machinery Foundation presents students with cash awards.
