Four champs guide Blue Devils to crown

VAN BUREN — Lance Rickle and Reese Mullholand won titles back to back and teammates Gage Summit and Tanner May added crowns Saturday to fuel Carey's Division III sectional tournament win at Van Buren High. The Blue Devils took the team title with 178 1/2 points while Bluffton and Elmwood tied for second with 146 points. Hopewell-Loudon finished eighth (73) and Calvert came in 11th (40 1/2). Rickle pinned Bluffton's Jeremy Sturgeon (5:14) for the 120-pound title and Mullholand earned an injury default win against Patrick Henry's Lee Borders for the 126-pound championship. Gage Summit added a title for the Blue Devils at 145 pounds by pinning Van Buren's Dino Donaldson (2:46) and May scored a 22-5 technical fall win against Riverdale's Ethan Shane for the 182-pound crown. Three other Blue Devils earned district berths — the top four in each weight class advanced to this week's district at Napoleon — and three others placed. Isaac Carman took third at 220 pounds for Carey, with fourths going to 170-pounder Hayden Jacoby and 195-pounder Kaeden Wentz. Carman pinned Liberty-Benton's Dylan Mersch (1:44). Jacoby suffered an 11-0 major decision loss to Elmwood's Sanford Fraley, and Wentz lost 7-4 to Elmwood's Zane Hagemeyer. Dylan Brown added a fifth at 138 pounds for Carey, with sixths going to 132-pounder Sam Hill 285-pounder Drew Steen. Brown beat North Baltimore's Levi Trout 12-7. Hill was pinned by Van Buren's Aiden Mowrey (:38) and Steen was pinned by McComb's Eli Franks (:40). Caden Crawford topped Hopewell-Loudon's effort by capturing the 132-pound title with an 11-5 win against Liberty-Benton's Dru Baker. Chieftains Blake Hoover, Lance Crawford and Nicardo Garcia each added a third. Hoover edged Arcadia's Bryan Harrison 3-2 via an ultimate tiebreaker at 126 pounds, Lance Crawford pinned Van Buren 138-pounder Nate Williamson (4:02) and Garcia beat Cory-Rawson's Justin Gibson 5-1 at 152 pounds. Calvert 106-pounder Kaylor Reynolds and 113-pounder Jace Wilson each finished second. Reynolds fell 6-4 to Patrick Henry's Jeff Camp, and Wilson was pinned by Bluffon's Tayton Kleman (:31). Parker Beard added a sixth at 170 pounds for the Senecas after a 16-0 technical fall loss to Bluffton's Jackson Wilson. Nine district berths fuel runner-up Redmen CLYDE — Bellevue and Clyde each ended with double-digit placers, but Ashland powered past them both on the second day Saturday to narrowly claim a Division II sectional title at Clyde High. Ashland nosed out Bellevue 201-199 for the team championship after ending the first day knotted with Clyde for second with 69 points while Bellevue led the way with 85. Despite an area team not capturing the championship, plenty of local grapplers earned berths to this Friday and Saturday's district tournament at Norwalk. The top four in each weight class advanced. The runner-up Redmen earned two titles and three seconds among their nine district qualifiers. Max Ray gave Bellevue the 145-pound crown by beating Ontario's Colton Turnbaugh 5-2, while 182-pounder Justin Mayes scored a 10-2 major decision against Jakob Beverly for the other. The runner-up finishes came from 120-pounder Jayden Mayes, 126-pounder Noah Alda and 138-pounder Justin Smythe. Jayden Mayes was pinned by Ashland's Case George (1:39), Alda lost 7-6 to Columbian's Bret Minnick and Smythe fell 7-6 to Upper Sandusky's Emery Pahl. Bellevue also got thirds from 170-pounder Collin Corapi and 220-pounder Dylan Adkins, while fourths went to 132-pounder Caiden Walters and 285-pounder Brock Nunez. Corapi beat Galion's Max Fisher 6-2 and Adkins earned a win against Clyde's Ben Seavers via default. Walters suffered a 10-2 major decision loss to Galion's Devin McCarthy, and Nunez pinned Ontario's Nate Hayes-Poole (3:19). Evan Straub added a fifth at 195 pounds for the Redmen by beating Madison Comprehensive's Matt Savick 9-2. Derick Coleman led Clyde by finishing second at 160 pounds. He lost 7-3 to Madison Comprehensive's Nate Barrett. The Fliers also got thirds from 120-pounder Chris Oleksiak and 126-pounder James Batesole. Oleksiak pinned Upper Sandusky's Caleb Clary (:48) and Batesole beat Clear Fork's Isaiah Thomas 5-3. Joining Seavers as fourth-place finishers were 106-pounder Dalton Boyd, 145-pounder Cameron Krueger and 182-pounder Jacob Eisenhower. Boyd suffered a 19-4 technical fall loss to Clear Fork's J.R. Carman, Krueger was pinned by Ashland's Jayden Jones and Eisenhower was pinned by Columbian's Kasean Hatlay (:36). Fifths went to 138-pounder Tyson West, 170-pounder Cade Carroll and 285-pounder Trenton Mominee, with 152-pounder Joshua Staley ending sixth. West pinned Ontario's Ethan Snyder (2:03), Carroll pinned Ontario's Brennan Strickler (3:54) and Mominee pinned Shelby's Tyler Shatzer (:24). Staley lost via default to Upper Sandusky's Ashton Shepherd. Columbian grapplers Brody Conley and Joey Simcoe each claimed crowns. Conley beat Ontario's Ethan Turnbaugh 10-6 and Simcoe scored a 9-0 major decision win against Madison Comprehensive's Trenton Osborn. Maddox Simcoe added a second at 132 pounds for the Tornadoes after a slim 4-3 loss to Mansfield's Josh Lyons. Jimmy Gibson and Kane Mears each added a fifth for TC. Gibson earned a default win at 160 pounds against Clear Fork's Matt Marzettie, and Mears beat Lexington 220-pounder Ammon Parr 2-0. Upper Sandusky 106-pounder Frank Depinet earned the day's first championship by pinning Ashland's Roman Parobek (2:48). Along with Shepherd, the Rams also got fifths from 132-pounder Ronan Gullifer, 145-pounder Brayzin McDaniel and 182-pounder Aiden Gallant. Gullifer pinned Ashland's Jesse Keener (2:35), McDaniel scored a 17-4 major decision win against Galion's Ian Lehman and Gallant earned a default win against Madison Comprehensive's Jamaal Coleman. Fostoria's Roger Hall took third at 195 pounds by edging Lexington's Hayden Hoskins 5-4, while teammate Kayden Hutchins ended sixth at 120 pounds after getting pinned by Galion's Kidren Clark (3:44). Franks crowned champ OAK HARBOR — Lakota's Trevor Franks cruised into the finals, then turned back Gibsonburg's Jonathon Auld to claim the 160-pound title Saturday at the Division III sectional tournament at Oak Harbor High. Franks had a bye and a pin Friday before pinning Northwood's Hunter Schmoekel (3:30) in Saturday's semifinals. He then beat Auld 9-6 for the title to improve to 37-0. He'll be joined at this week's district tournament by Raider teammate Spencer Franks, who ended fourth at 195 pounds after a 3-0 loss to Oak Harbor's Kenyon Atkinson. Lakota 138-pounder Austin Witte added a fifth by beating Gibsonburg's Antonio Villarreal 10-4. The top four in each weight class earned berths to the district tournament at Napoleon. Clouse, Laughlin capture titles at Plymouth PLYMOUTH — Mohawk and Seneca East each had a champion and combined for 11 district qualifiers Saturday at the Division III sectional tournament at Plymouth High. James Clouse sparked Mohawk by pinning Plymouth's Dylan Van Fleet (5:35) for the 220-pound title, helping the Warriors end third with 154 points. Edison rolled past Ashland Crestview 328-214 for the team. Buckeye Central came in 14th (16). Jace Margraf, Morgan Price and Bryce Sheets added seconds for Mohawk, with each loss coming to an Edison foe. Margraf lost 2-0 to Alec Hohman at 120 pounds, Price suffered a 9-0 major decision loss to 152-pounder Shadrick Slone, and Sheets was pinned by Jacob Brewer (:27) at 195 pounds. Kael Margraf took third for Mohawk at 126 pounds by pinning Plymouth's Keith Tuttle (2:56), and 170-pounder Grant Theis ended fourth after losing 7-6 to St. Paul's Ben Meyer. The Warriors also got fifths from 132-pounder Owen England and 145-pounder Alex Theis, while 182-pounder Branyon Winings came in sixth. England beat Willard's Juan Figueroa by an 8-0 major decision, and Theis doubled up New London's Mikey Dalton 6-3. Winings lost 2-1 to Ashland Crestview's Garrett Hunt. The top four in each weight class qualified for the district at Napoleon. Seneca East's title came from 138-pounder Dakota Laughlin, who pinned Ashland Crestview's Kage Briggs (2:18). Luke Bischoff added a second at 132 pounds for the Tigers, Bryce Wise claimed third at 145 pounds, and fourths went to 120-pounder Hunter Lacy and 285-pounder Dustin Smith. Bischoff was pinned by Edison's Casey Barnett (1:46), Wise pinned Plymouth's Noah Trimmer (2:40), Lacy was pinned by St. Paul's Aiden Naseman (2:14) and Smith was pinned by Edison's Cason Holmes (2:56). Buckeye Central got sixths from 120-pounder J.R. Martin and 195-pounder Jacob Maxhimer. Martin was pinned by Ashland Crestview's Michael Mays (:59) and Maxhimer was pinned by Plymouth's Adler Home (:34).
