Three seeking to become Seneca County's sheriff

A captain at Seneca County Sheriff's Office, a former Seneca County deputy and Tiffin's police chief have filed petitions and are seeking to be elected as the county's next sheriff. Capt. David Pahl; Matt Huffman, a former deputy in Seneca County; and Chief Fred Stevens of Tiffin Police Department — all Republicans — filed petitions to appear on the ballot for the March primary election. Sheriff William Eckelberry also had filed a petition. He officially withdrew, according to Seneca County Board of Elections. The board of elections is to consider certification of petitions Monday. Others — also all Republicans — filed petitions and would be running unopposed in the primary election. Judge Jay Meyer is seeking to keep his seat as Seneca County Juvenile and Probate Court Judge; Jean Eckelberry is running to keep her seat as Seneca County Clerk of Courts; and Dr. Mark Akers is seeking to remain the county's coroner. No one has filed a petition to run as Seneca County's prosecutor. However, Prosecutor Derek DeVine announced Monday he is circulating petitions to run for re-election. DeVine runs as an independent and still is collecting signatures on his petitions, which are due in March, according to a release.
