Clyde-Green Springs students back in school

GREEN SPRINGS — Clyde-Green Springs principals and administrators assured school board members they were prepared for the first day of school, which was Tuesday. All thanked Maintenance Director Randy Hawk for the great condition of their buildings during the board meeting Monday evening. Curriculum Director Joe Letterhos informed the board that the district had received a $70,000 school improvement grant to be used over the next four years. Special Education Director Dave Marchman noted they have been assessing students using a play-based interaction to determine if students need additional help. In order to reduce costs, the district determined to conduct an in-house pre-school program. Director Kendal Hossler said that two morning classes and two afternoon classes will be available. Assessing students is in progress and the program may have 64 students participating. The program is located in the Clyde Elementary building. Transportation Director Dan Shaffer stated the district needs bus drivers. He reported the district's new school bus should arrive next week while a new van is scheduled for delivery in late September. Treasurer Meghan Rohde informed board members of the state wellness and support funds for the district to conduct mental health services, mentoring, social services, veterans' programs or family engagement by partnering with an organization or educational service center. ALICE — alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate — training was conducted for all substitute staff members to be prepared in case of an emergency in the buildings. Board members entered into two different executive sessions to consider compensation for a public employee. Action was not taken following either session. In other action, board members: • Approved the treasurer's report. • Approved staff personnel action. • Employed non-certificated persons for extra-duty jobs. • Employed Tracy Nicely as coordinator for the 2019-20 WSOS After School Program and be paid a $1,500 stipend. • Approved the revised district calendar. • Approved the non-represented clerical employees salary and benefits. • Approved payout for accumulated comp-time to Board of Education non-union staff. • Tabled the motion for approval of the administrative handbook and salary schedule. • Approved agreement with Wood County Juvenile Detention Center. • Approved the contract with North Central Ohio Education Service Center for audiology services. • Approved the contract for services with Haugland Learning Center. • Approved the physical therapy/adaptive physical education agreement with Clyde Progressive Therapy. • Approved the revision to board policy regarding non-union support staff hours and overtime. • Approved the service agreement renewal with Spectrum. • Approved early entrance to kindergarten for Samuel Frazier and Payton Smith. • Approved the negotiated agreement with the Clyde-Green Springs CGSEA teachers' union • Approved the speech-language pathologist substitute contract for Karen Middlesworth. • Approved the C-GS preschool parent handbook for 2019-20. • Accepted gifts and donations to the school. The board of education's next meeting is 6 p.m. Sept. 30.
