Operations continue at Wyandot County Humane Society

UPPER SANDUSKY — Wyandot County Humane Society has been continuing daily operations as it works to serve dogs found in a SR 53 facility. It is one of the few shelters in Ohio that doesn't turn people away, said Lynda Balz, who has served as the director of Wyandot County Humane Society for 34 years. "We don't turn anything away," she said. Wyandot County Humane Society, at 9640 CH 330, Upper Sandusky, includes a lost-cost spay and neuter clinic called "Helping Our Pets Everywhere," or HOPE. It also includes Wyandot County Equine Rescue, located on the society's farm on SR 199, north of Upper Sandusky. According to Wyandot County Humane Society's website, it is the only shelter of its kind in northwest and north central Ohio and is staffed 8 a.m.-10 p.m. every day for accepting animals. It requests people call ahead to surrender large or unusual animals, giant breed dogs or three or more animals. Appointments are needed to drop off a horse. "WCHS is funded almost exclusively through the fundraising efforts of its dedicated volunteers. WCHS does not receive any governmental support from any local, regional, state or federal entity," according to its website. "Our Friday, Saturday, and Sunday charitable bingo provides the bulk of the shelter's operating funds, along with the generous donations of our supporters and some private grant funding." The society has at least 25 employees, two live-in care-takers and trainers at the farm, and two full-time veterinarians. The facility took in 14,000 animals last year, Balz said.
