Long time teacher remembered at Old Fort board meeting

BETTSVILLE — Elizabeth "Betty" O. Casselman was honored at Old Fort School's board of education meeting Monday night. The board accepted six donations totaling $2,130 in Casselman's memory. All of the donations are pledged to the Old Fort elementary library. Casselman passed away on June 6, 2019 at the age of 103. Casselman was a long time teacher at Old Fort Schools, where she taught kindergarten and first grade. She served in the Marine Corps for 2 ½ years during World War II. She was also a graduate of Heidelberg College. Casselman would have been 104 today. Other donations included $25 to the elementary library in memory of Kay Fausey, and $100 from the American Legion for marching in the Memorial Day Parade. The district will also be adding more extracurricular activities this school year. The board approved Superintendent Tom Pfieffer's recommendation to add bowling as a winter sport. Also approved is the addition of e-sports as a school club for the 2019-2020 school year. The board also consented to the resignations of Myranda Schuster, the elementary music teacher, and Angela Fredritz, an elementary aide. The board is already with a replacement for music teacher, approving Kathryn Quaintance to a one-year contract. Also hired is Helen Coleman to teach math. Coleman's contract is one year. The board approved the hire of Julie Stawowy as junior class advisor; Erika Galindo as teaching aide; and Torrie Ruiz as Image Teacher. Board member Jay Pence was not present at the meeting.
