Closing one year, preparing for the next

SYCAMORE —Treasurer Rhonda Feasel summarized the final accounts for the Mohawk Board of Education which closed June 30. Feasel was happy to report that "The final total of expenditures was within $21 of what I had projected." The 2019-2020 budget should be ready for the board's approval at the August board meeting. The state legislature has yet to approve their budget. Cafeteria prices have been increased by 25 cents. The last increase was two years ago. Price for lunch for grades K-8 will be $2.75 and grades 7-12 $3.25. Breakfast is to be $1.69 and Hot Bar $3.50 and student milk 40 cents. Joshua Messersmith was the sole board member voting against the increases. Elementary principal Tami Wallace announced class lists and bus lists are to be available Aug 5. Open House is scheduled for the evening of Aug. 19 prior to the first day of class on Aug 20. The elementary is to be starting the third year of the Franklin Covey program, Leader in Me. So far students have focused on goal setting and leadership skills and are to add an academic focus in this third year. In other business the board: • Approved expenditure for extended summer therapy services. • Renewed membership in the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding at the cost of $453. • Authorized the treasurer to place 20% of the income tax proceeds to the Permanent Improvement Fund. • Approved lists of substitute teachers, bus drivers, secretarial staff and nurses and aides. • Accepted the $38,916 bid from UIS Insurance for liability, vehicle and property insurance. • Contracted with Wellness Solutions for school-based counseling services which is to be covered by a grant. • Hired Dan Burks and Patsy Hill as bus drivers and Marc Coffman as custodian. • Employed Kyle Jacoby and Brad Rice, JH football coaches and Stephanie Hushour, varsity FB cheer. • Accepted a donation for the Gary Cooper Scholarship. The board adjourned to executive session to discuss the performance of an employee. No action was to be taken.
