Welcome to the new Weekend Edition!

I know a good thing when I see it, and when I see that The Advertiser-Tribune has been serving Seneca County for more than 185 years, I knew I was walking into a good thing. I believe that community newspapers are the past, present and future, as there is nobody that can tell the news of the Tiffin area like our embedded group of community journalists can. I couldn't be more excited to be joining a community institution that has a bright future. With any institution, change is sometimes investable, and while The Advertiser-Tribune works hard to provide a consistent level of excellence year in and year out, we also look to grow and evolve with rapidly changing times so that we are in good position to be this area's top news source for the next 185 years. With that, I couldn't be more excited for today's paper, the first enhanced Saturday Weekend Edition. While we are moving to publishing six days a week without a Sunday edition moving forward, we are rolling many of your favorite features of Saturday and Sunday into one large edition, with a fresh new look. You'll see a front page "anchor" story each week looking at a local issue or highlighting an element of our community, along with a newly designed Page 1 that presents the news in an organized and interesting way. You will continue to have the features you've come to love in our weekend papers, including local and regional coverage, comics, local opinions including my weekly column, community and sports calendars and all of our weekend comics and puzzles. Also, know that included with your subscription is access to our E-Edition, which is an online replication of each day's paper. You are the reason why we are here. It's a message I will share many times in this space because it is a message I believe in. This isn't the paper of myself or The Advertiser-Tribune staff. It is your paper, and serving the community is a foundational mission of what we do. I like to say that our editorial staff only has a handful of eyes and ears combined. With the population of Seneca County sitting at more than 50,000, that means there are a lot more eyes and ears out there than we could ever put together. Therefore, I am encouraging you to send news in your community to us — specifically me, at jspeer@advertiser-tribune.com. We will do our best to get our reporting team to cover the events and issues of this area, but if you are the organizer of a community event, have a tip on a big issue or simply have a neat photo you'd like to submit for publishing consideration, please send them our way. If you are a local "expert" in a certain area who would like some space to write a recurring editorial piece about an aspect of the community, let me know. Newspapers traditionally have been beacons in the community they serve, sharing a snapshot of what life is life in a place during the moment they are printed. Along the way, they grew to include state, national and world news. While these are important parts of papers, and we won't stop including that sort of news, we know that our niche is local, and want to put as many local names and faces into our pages as possible. This is where a community comes in — letting us know about upcoming things, submitting press releases and being partners in us putting together a great paper in Seneca County! Another thing I look to build in my first few months here are news and sports readership committees, where we have a panel of diverse community members who meets quarterly to discuss aspects of our paper and provide us guidance of how we should position ourselves in the future.
