TPD investigating accident Friday as possible overdose

Tiffin Police Department is investigating an accident on North Sandusky Street Friday as being caused by a possible drug overdose. Sgt. Jared Watson of Tiffin Police Department said Melinda K. Smith, 50, of Tiffin, was in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu in the parking lot of B&B Food Mart, 263 N. Washington St. Allan J. Hines, 75, of Tiffin, was stopped in traffic in a 2010 Honda Accord in the northbound lane of North Sandusky Street with a youth. Watson said Smith's vehicle left the parking lot at a slow rate of speed traveling south in the northbound lane of North Sandusky Street. Smith's Chevrolet struck the Honda that was stopped in traffic, he said. Watson said there were no injuries as a result of the accident, but Smith was transported by Tiffin Fire Rescue Division to Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital as a precautionary measure. Smith was cited with failure to control and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, he said. Watson said the department is investigating the accident as being caused by a possible drug overdose. There may be additional charges pending the investigation, he said. Everybody involved was wearing their seatbelts, he said. The accident was reported at 3:07 p.m.
