Richard E. Digby

Richard E. Digby, 78, of Tiffin, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo. Richard was born Feb. 7, 1939, in Tiffin, to Earl Robert and Caroline Elizabeth (Palmerton) Digby. He married Beverly (Wertz) July 2, 1967, in Tiffin, and she survives in Tiffin. Survivors also include a son, Monte A. (Silvia) Digby of Berlin, Connecticut; daughter, Courtnie (Dustin) Williams of Tiffin; nine grandchildren, Matt and Marissa Digby of Berlin, Connecticut, Anderson, Jackson and Hayden, all of Tiffin, and Katlynn, Justin, Madison and Jillian; a brother, Jim L. Digby of Tiffin; a sister, Sandra K. George of Palmetto, Florida; six sisters-in-law, Darylene (Phil) Dunn of Bloomville, Shirley Shane of Amsden, Wanda (Gene) Fruth of Findlay, LuAnn Otte of Bascom and Sheila Digby and Pat Digby, both of Tiffin; three brothers-in-law, Gene (Janice) Wertz of Fostoria, Don (Pam) Wertz of Bascom and Kerry Wertz of Fostoria; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, E. Thomas, John and Jake Digby; two sisters, Hazel Scalf and Delores Wells; and his beloved dog, "Jake." Richard first started working at Tiffin Art Metal then worked at Tiffin Saving Bank as a teller, in the lab at Hayes-Albion, then was store manager at Dean's Discount and finished up as owner/operator of The Gallery Antique Shop in Tiffin. Richard also lectured and appraised antiques using his 64 years of knowledge dealing in antiques. Richard was a former Kiwanis member, a 1958 graduate of Tiffin Columbian High School and also attended Kent State University. He was a United States Army veteran. He will be remembered for being kind and soft spoken and as the champion of the family for his dry sense of humor. A funeral for Richard will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017, at St. John United Church of Christ, Tiffin, with the Rev. Eric Rummel officiating. Burial will follow in Sandridge Cemetery, Bascom, with military rites being rendered by United Veterans Council. Visitation for family and friends will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin.
