Council seeks banner sponsors

REPUBLIC — Republic Councilman Mike Schreiner informed members Monday night that 20 banners — 10 for summer and 10 for winter — are to cost $95 each. He is to contact organizations and businesses in the community for sponsors. The banners will have the sponsors' names on them in the downtown area. Interested businesses may contact the village office. Police Chief Don Holmer led a discussion on the placement of cameras for security at the pump house and the maintenance building. Council approved the purchase from Sam's Club and billing clerk Jodi Honaker has secured a Public Entities Pool grant for reimbursement of funds spent up to $500. Council also discussed junk vehicles sitting in the village and Holmer plans to send letters to offenders for removal. Also, Seneca County Health Department was contacted about a vacant house. The owner is attempting to make improvements and the board of health is to meet Thursday for a determination. Mayor Jeff Larick directed Holmer to contact Solicitor Jim Gucker about dealing with the property through a village nuisance ordinance. Holmer also introduced the possibility of Bloomville wanting to form a joint police department but councilmembers had no comment. The village brush pile recently was burned, allowing for new brush to be delivered. Residents may call the village at (419) 595-5981 for an appointment to gain access to the area. Other action taken: • Heard all funds contain $1,729,615.74 with $600,000 invested. • Announced the Sons of the American Legion have scheduled a meat raffle at Attica Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. Saturday featuring sides of beef and a whole hog. • Approved the policy for electronic banking for utility payments, as recommended by the auditor. • Approved the policy for adjustments to customer utility accounts. • Heard the first reading of the ordinance approving a flat rate of $7 for storm sewer rates for all customers. • Noted recycling bins always are available to residents behind the old school gymnasium. Council meets at 7 p.m. March 6.
