Frederick E. 'Fred' Swartz

Frederick E. "Fred" Swartz, 92, of Tiffin, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Nov. 11, 2016, at his home, surrounded by family. He was born Oct. 16, 1924, in Tiffin, to Jesse and Edna (Karcher) Swartz. April 12, 1947, he married Madeline Marie Reinhart. Survivors include his wife, Madeline, of Tiffin; two sons, David (Patty Smith) Swartz and Don (Deb) Swartz, both of Tiffin; two daughters, Barb (Jimmie) Young of Sycamore and Jane Bower of Tiffin; two brothers, Robert Turner of California and Dennis (Amy) Turner of Tiffin; sister, Shirley (Verlin) Thacker of Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, Jim Steinmetz, Laurie Morter, Jeffrey Swartz, Julie Dean, Kathryn Swartz, Karen Swartz-Dowling, Kristy Risner, Sharon Pheifer, Jonathon Risner, Daniel Bower, Joseph Swartz and Christa Stacklin; and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and Richard Swartz; two sisters, Betty Swartz and Laura Swartz; great-grandchild, Cathryn Risner; and great-great-grandchild, Brooklyn Taylor. Fred served in the U.S. Navy as a torpedoman mate third class from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. Recently, Fred was honored as a "Plank Owner" or first seaman on the ship, on the historical monument, U.S.S. Cassin Young docked in Boston Harbor. He was a press operator and welder at General Electric, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Tiffin Lion's Club, St. Mary Catholic Church and their funeral luncheon committee and the men's choir. He enjoyed traveling, yard work, playing in card clubs with friends, helping his family and he loved spending time with his grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events and school activities. His Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Walters officiating. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to Mass. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military honors being conducted by United Veterans Council.
