Man charged after boy suffers skull fracture

A Tiffin man was arrested after a toddler suffered a skull fracture, according to Seneca County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Troy Callahan said Andrew Althaus, 21, was charged with felonious assault and child endangerment, both third-degree felonies. Althaus’ bond was set at $250,000, cash or surety, on each count in Tiffin-Fostoria Municipal Court. The court gave him a 10-percent allowance. At 9:50 p.m. Thursday, a person from an emergency room reported an incident that had occurred in the county with an infant, according to a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office report. Callahan said the 17-month-old boy’s mother came home, found the injuries and took him to the hospital. Deputies did not know how the injury happened but believed Althaus, who was caring for the child at the time, caused it, he said. “(Althaus) was at the hospital,” he said. “He just wasn’t back in the room.” Althaus, who is the fiance of the boy’s mother, was arrested at Mercy Tiffin Hospital and remained incarcerated at Seneca County Jail Friday night. The boy was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo by ground ambulance and remained hospitalized Friday night, he said. Callahan declined to identify the boy.
