Seneca East voters renew income tax levy

ATTICA — Voters within Seneca East Local School District approved the renewal of a five-year, 1% income tax levy Tuesday. According to unofficial results, 720 voted in favor of the levy with 384 voting against the levy. “We are very thankful for the support this community has given us,” Laura Kagy, superintendent, said. The levy is an existing operating income tax levy that has been in effect since 2001. The levy was last approved in 2015. The levy generates $1,141,408 per year for the district, Kagy had said. “The funds generated are used to help with the education of our students by providing funds to pay salaries and benefits for the staff and to enable us to purchase updated textbooks, library books and other classroom supplies,” Kagy had said. “The levy is to also help pay the cost associated with the maintenance of the building and grounds.” “The funds from the levy also help to pay for the insurance, heat, water, trash removal and internet/phone service in the building,” Kagy had said. “This levy is vital to keep the education, transportation and maintenance in the Seneca East Local school at the current level.” Kagy said this levy is critical for the district’s budget, with possible cuts coming from the state.
