Two die in crash

YORK TOWNSHIP — The Fremont Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a two-vehicle, fatal crash that took place Wednesday evening on US 20 and Township Road 302 in Sandusky County.According to a release provided by OSHP, Mark E. Whaley, 50, of Bellevue was driving a 2006 silver Ford Focus eastbound on US 20 in the right lane. Whaley's 7-year old grandson was in the right rear passenger seat.Mark W. Wagner, 67, of Saxonburg, Pennsylvania was driving a 2020 Mack Pinnacle semi-truck east bound on US 20, also in the right lane.Whaley stopped for a red light at the intersection while Wagner was unable to stop with assured clear distance ahead and struck Whaley in the rear.Both vehicles ran off the south side of US 20 and struck a large utility pole and fence, the release said.Heavy rain was reported in the area of the crash.Whaley and is grandson sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. According to the release, Whaley was not wearing his seatbelt, but his grandson was.Wagner only sustained minor injuries and was wearing his seatbelt, the release stated.According to the release, alcohol or drug impairment did not appear to be a factor in the crash.Assisting at the scene was the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Bellevue Police Department, Bellevue Fire Department, Sandusky County EMS, North Central EMS, Ohio Edison and Madison Motors.The crash remains to be under investigation Thursday.
