Columbian's Kinn, Beaston and Reaves earn All-Ohio honors

When Columbian boys basketball coach Travis Kinn was named the All-Northwest District coach of the year a few weeks ago, he admitted he was shocked. Fast forward to Tuesday, he was shocked once again.This time, Kinn was named Ohio's coach of the year in Division II when the All-Ohio list was released Tuesday by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association. "Again, I was a little surprised. I wasn't expecting it and it's a great award and a great honor," Kinn said. "Again, it's a recognition that comes with a combination of things. A lot of credit goes to our guys and I've been grateful to have a variety of administrators, especially athletic directors that have been very supportive throughout the process. "(Derek) Lewis, (Brad) Scheiber, (Larry) Kisabeth and now (Daniel) Hartsel … it would've been easy when we were struggling for someone to come in and make a change, but they were able to see the things we were doing and the time we put in with the kids and kind of let things come to fruition."Kinn (59-82 record), a sixth-year coach at TC, had some tough seasons starting out, but the program is turned around as the Tornadoes just completed a 20-win season, a share of a SBC Lake Division title and a trip to the district finals.The 20 wins are a school record for wins in a season, it was TC's first league title since 2010 back when it was in the Northern Ohio League and it played for its first district title since 1970."It was tough. It was tough for me and it was tough for our staff and tough for the guys playing at the high school level at that time," Kinn said of trusting the process after a few rough seasons early on. "We all wanted to be successful, but to be honest, we were doing a lot of the same things we're doing now, we just weren't able to execute some things as well as we are able to now. It was difficult, especially for the kids, but I give a lot of credit to the guys. "Probably the best thing I've done is to talk less and listen more. With our players and our coaching staff. We have some outstanding coaches on our staff and I'm blessed and fortunate to have three guys on our staff that have been head coaches before. It's been a process, and this is exciting. I was just hoping to see Logan (Beaston) and LJ (Reaves) get some honors as well, which they did, but we know the work isn't done and this means there will be even a bigger target on our back moving forward."Along with Kinn's honor came two TC players on the All-Ohio list.Beaston earned special mention and Reaves was an honorable mention selection in Division II.Beaston averaged 15.6 points, six rebounds and 3.1 assists in his sophomore season. "Logan is an incredibly talented kid," Kinn said. "He puts in an immense amount of time and when they made their Final Four run in football, he was in here shooting three nights a week. That's just what he does. This is something I expected for him at some point, but I didn't know it would come in his sophomore season. It is a hell of an honor as a sophomore to make All-Ohio recognition. "Again, it's crazy to say you expect that from a kid so young, but he expects that for himself. I think the great thing about this is that him and I would both trade these awards for a district title, but there is still time for that, so hopefully in the future." Reaves, the only senior on the team last season, recorded 14.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Reaves has been through ups and downs in the program over his four years, but with his leadership, the Tornadoes experienced new heights."It's a great way to end his career and I think he's kind of the definition of what our program has been through the last few years," Kinn said of Reaves. "He's seen the bad and the good and he's been through it all. We're really proud of him. He really stuck through the tough times and got through it. "He played since he was a freshman, so it was tough for him, tough for me … there were times where I'm sure he questioned himself and there were times I questioned myself, but he always kept showing up to work and kept plugging away. I'm proud of him and excited for him, it's a great way to cap off his career."Kinn also acknowledged coach Joe Stacy for getting the players in tremendous shape gearing up for a season. "He does a tremendous job getting them ready through speed camps or in the weight room," Kinn said. "He's an undervalued and integral part of what we're doing as well."One other local player earned All-Ohio honors in Division II as Upper Sandusky senior Gavin Carey was a honorable mention selection.
