TCS hires superintendent

Tiffin City Board of Education hired a new superintendent Tuesday evening during a special meeting. Following an executive session, the board approved the hiring of Van McWreath as superintendent. McWreath has served as high school principal of Painesville City Local Schools. Board member Meagan McBride headed the superintendent search committee, and said it was a great opportunity to work with the community and district staff for input on a superintendent candidate. McWreath earned his bachelor of science degree in secondary education and master's degree in education administration with a high school principal certification from Youngstown State University, and educational leadership certifications from Liberty and Ashland universities. He also served in the 18th Airborne Corps. of the United States Army for three years. McWreath said he is thankful for the opportunity. "The board did a thorough job in their search," McWreath said. "I've spent time talking with community members and I can see they really care for the district and their schools." McBride said McWreath was a stellar candidate who, with his experience, excitement and energy, will bring stability to the community and is a good fit for the district. According to McBride, McWreath's contract is to be negotiated with counsel and terms finalized. The board started its search with 24 candidates and narrowed them down. According to information provided by the Ohio School Board Association, the Tiffin City board had 10 candidates — including McWreath — on its interview list. Candidates included Matthew Chrispin, superintendent of Bucyrus City Schools; Scott Hartley of North Fork Local Schools; Steven Lee, assistant superintendent of Maumee City Schools; Kristine Michael, assistant superintendent of Northridge Local Schools; Shawn Murphy, principal of Tiffin Middle School; Derrick Sheldon, principal of Reynoldsburg City Schools; Forrest Tristler, principal of Tiffin Columbian High School; William Welker, superintendent of Eastwood Local Schools; and Michael Zalar, superintendent of North Olmstead City School District.
