Kiwanis Club of Tiffin Calvert volleyball coach Lori Rombach was the featured speaker at the April 8 virtual meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin before 28 members and guests. Calvert's volleyball team has won two of the last three Ohio state Division IV championships and in 2020 completed an undefeated season. Lori is a Calvert graduate as well as a John Carroll University graduate. She played volleyball at both Calvert and JCU. She began coaching CYO and later junior high volleyball before taking the head coaching job at Calvert three years ago. Prior to the volleyball championships, Calvert had won a state golf championship in 1976 and football championships in 1980 and 1981. Calvert's volleyball team defeated New Bremen for the championships in 2018 and again in 2020 and had lost to New Bremen in the regional final in 2019. Lori said that she bases her coaching on four keys – be kind, be happy for other athletes' accomplishments, have fun and work hard. She credits Calvert's volleyball success on having talented and skilled players that put in a lot of practice hours and display selflessness and commitment. She said she has also come to accept that some luck is involved but that luck is the moment that hard work meets opportunity. Brad McClung celebrated his birthday and Andy Wiedemann and his wife, Donna, their wedding anniversary. Rick Dorsch and Melissa Mullins celebrated club anniversaries. Sarah Jones, Sentinel and Seneca East student, was welcomed as the guest of Mary Lewis. Mark Zeno reminded club members that he will be collecting items for the Kiwanis garage sale. No clothing, tube televisions or used computers will be accepted. Club president Michelle Tuite reminded members of the donation drive-thru at Kiwanis Manor. Local artist and Tiffin Art Guild member Jon Adams spoke about acrylic painting at the April 15 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin before 30 members and guests. Jon was born in Tiffin and graduated from Hopewell-Loudon and his career work was in graphic design. He enjoys painting on canvas and raising cats and has also written fiction books. After living in California for 30 years, he moved back to Tiffin to be close to family. Jon "put all of his eggs in one basket" in the '90s by setting up his own studio in which McDonnell Douglas provided 75% of his revenue. When McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997 and the stock swap left Boeing as the surviving company, Jon lost the contract. He also taught for seven years at the Tiffin Art Guild but hasn't done so for the last four. Jon has done over 450 paintings with five of those currently displayed at Bailiwicks Coffee Company. His work can be viewed at jondude.com. Gene Chintala, Steve Schreiner and Bob Shreiner celebrated club anniversaries. Club member Rich Traunero's father (Bob) recently passed away and was remembered by the club. Melissa Mullins reported that the birthday bag project for local foster children has been completed. Thirty-six bags were made. Those who helped with the April 14 collection for the Salvation Army were thanked. American Legion Auxiliary #169 The April meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary #169 was opened by President MaryAnne Boehler. The minutes of the March meeting were read by secretary Denise Mullennex and approved. Karen Kotnik, treasurer read the money reports and they stood approved. Trapp reported on the Easter basket distribution. Six volunteers helped put the baskets together on March 23 at the post. We had 21 children participating in the giveaway. Volunteers, Dylan Whitmer, K'lee Mullennex and Evan Schleter helped to get baskets to the children. A big thank you to all who donated time, money, candy and toys for the baskets was read by Trapp. The memorial service for Ethel Schleter, deceased president of the auxiliary, took place on April 10, as reported by Trapp. Deb Sutherland, fifth district president, and Jane Yeager, fifth district vice president, conducted the service. Sutherland read a poem, "The Dash" and remarked on Schleter's ten years of service. Yeager conducted the "Draping of the Charter." Each auxiliary member present was given a white rose, donated by Marilyn Coney, to present to the altar of the memorial. Tina Schleter gave everyone Ethel's favorite homemade chocolate candy bar with a nice remembrance wrapper around it. An 8x11 picture of Schleter was presented by the Jim Schleter family to hang on the wall of past presidents. A light luncheon was enjoyed by Post, Sons, Auxiliary, Riders, family and guests present. A donation box made by Samantha Wyatt took in over $400.00 for SMYL, Ethel's favorite charity in Tiffin. A card was read from Brooke Moon thanking us for our donation to her project at the Veterans Home in Sandusky. Boehler reported the poppy sale will take place on May 22. Volunteers are needed for a couple hours to help sell that day. Boehler has constructed a Facebook page for the American Legion Auxiliary. We will try to keep all members updated on our projects within the club. Anyone is welcome to join. Sandy Schletter reported sending out 4 sympathy cards and one get well card. Election of officers took place with candidates MaryAnne Boehler, President. Barbara Trapp Vice President, Denise Mullennex, Secretary, Karen Kotnik, Treasurer, Marilyn Coney, Chaplain and Kelly Van Camp as Sergeant-at-Arms. The next meeting will be May 10 with installation of officers. American Legion Riders #169 American Legion Riders #169 April 12 meeting was opened by Director Jim Schleter. Treasurer Jim Trapp gave his report and it stood approved. Due were paid by eight members. Outstanding dues are now expected for 2021. Schleter reported on the Legacy Poker Run that will take place June 11. We will be the first stop on the run. Plans are being made to have a free bar-b-que available for all that day. He is working on a special project with Sentinel students for a raffle item to be raffled that day. Baseball teams from Heidelberg will be joining us that day for food and refreshments during the breaks in their games. Trapp reported that another grab and go pennant has been taken by the Wauseon group. We have four out now at the Green Springs post, Madison post and Ashland post. Need riders to go collect our items. Contact Jim Trapp. Barbara Trapp reported the poppy sales will be on May 22. Veterans at Sandusky Veterans Home make the poppies. All poppy money collected goes back to veterans. This year some of the money went to buy an outdoor movie projector, popcorn machine and cotton candy machine for the vets to enjoy. Volunteers are needed and welcome, just contact her. Mohawk Area Women's Literary Club The April meeting of the Mohawk Area Women's Literary Club was held in the community room at the Mohawk Community Library with social distancing observed. President Judy Gucker opened the meeting by sharing "How to Keep a Happy Life." Thirteen members answered roll call with their favorite movie or show from Sally Field's career. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read and the treasurer's report given. Since the club was not able to meet in December due to the rising number of local COVID-19 cases, it was decided to collect our food pantry and love gift donations at our May meeting. Correspondence from Donna Overholt and Linda Sommerfield were read. Their resignations were accepted with regret and understanding. Nancy Bentz made a motion to change Tena Koehler's membership status to that of honorary member. The motion was seconded by Beth Lininger. Motion passed unanimously. Librarian Barb Phillips shared both interesting and humorous excerpts from the handwritten "History of the Women's Literary Club" for the years 1946-1947 and 1947-1948. The following members confirmed their willingness to serve as officers for the upcoming year: President, Judy Gucker; Vice President, Virginia Shellhouse; Secretary, Nancy Bentz; Assistant Secretary, Sue Crow; Treasurer, Cindy Lupton; Assistant Treasurer, Beth Lininger; and Librarian, Barb Phillips. Linda Osborn and Barb Dayton will serve on the Budget Committee. Crow made a motion to purchase a children's book for the Mohawk Community Library in memory of Christina Riedel who served as the children's librarian. The motion was seconded by Dayton. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned. Lininger led the discussion for this month's read, "In Pieces" by Sally Field. In this intimate and haunting memoir, Field tells her own story about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and the emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother. Take home refreshments were provided by hostesses Lupton and Osborn. "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens will be discussed at the 7 p.m. May 3 meeting, which will be in the community room at the Mohawk Community Library. The meetings are open to anyone interested in attending. Daughters of the American Revolution — Jane Washington Chapter Regent Sharon Casey called the April 8 meeting of the Jane Washington Chapter of DAR to order at KemoSabes Roadhouse Grill in Fostoria. Eleven members attended. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the DAR Ritual and the American's Creed. Judy Shreck gave the National Defense moment. Dessert was served. Under old business, the secretary and treasurer's reports were read, approved and filed for audit. The program was given by well-known Fostoria historian Leonard Skonecki. He presented a very interesting program on "Notable Fostoria Women." Fostoria was named for Charles W. Foster, Sr. His son Charles W. Foster, Jr. became governor of Ohio. His youngest daughter Annie was a librarian and instrumental in establishing what is now known as Kaubisch Memorial Public Library. She was a great benefactor to Fostoria. Other notable early business women were Harriet Eastman and Jennie Graham, who began a millinery shop; Jennifer Bauman, a photographer and Bertha Wickert who began as a traveling saleswoman for a local music shop. She eventually went out on her own, bought a shop on Main Street and began selling all kinds of music, including instruments. Committee reports were given. Regent Casey announced a member of our chapter, Kristin Hibbett, has been a member for 65 years. Congratulations! Registrar Marilyn Stinehart announced applications were approved for two new junior members, Renee Marie Miller and Alexis Marie Parker. We welcome these young ladies. The next meeting will be May 6. Guests today were Anne Goon with Beth Schweitzer. Anne is taking over the reins at the Seneca County Health District when Beth retires on April 30. Attendance today was 25. Celebrating birthdays were Mark Akers and Dave Weininger. District Governor Keith Hodkinson reported that about 30% of Ohio's population has been vaccinated. He encouraged members to volunteer for the Rotary COVID Coalition by registering at www.ohioresponds.odh.oh.gov. He also encouraged us to register for the upcoming Multi-District Conference scheduled via Zoom on April 23-24. Golf Chair Janet Herzog reported that then Jack Wangler Rotary Golf Outing will be September 13 at Mohawk Golf Course. Johnny Demith has agreed to co-chair the event. They will need some volunteers. If you can help, please contact Janet or Johnny. Janet announced that our own Chris Lewis from Thrivent Financial Services has agreed to be the major sponsor. Vocational Talks was our program today. Nicole Miller went first. Nicole graduated from Mohawk High School and Heidelberg University. She is the local State Farm Insurance agent, taking over from Ed Lape and Jim Green who both retired. One of her major goals is to help people understand insurance. Many people don't know that she also offers life insurance. Nicole is married with a 19-month old daughter. One of the things she likes best about her job is being able to serve her community. Isabelle "Izzy" Lewis was home-schooled through junior high and then attended Columbian High School. She then went to Sentinel and obtained her license for cosmetology. She is currently a student at Tiffin University working towards her bachelor's degree in Business Administration. She was very involved in SkillsUSA, 4-H, Junior Leadership and participated in several musicals and plays. She is engaged to be married and has a four-year old son. She has worked at the Regional Planning Commission and is now Safety Director at SCAT. She is also a stylist at N8's Barber Shop at Sixes Corners. She wanted to join Rotary so she could follow in the steps of both her father and grandfather and live Rotary's motto of "service above self." Tiffin Glass Collector's Club Members and one guest of the Tiffin Glass Collectors Club met on Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. Meetings have returned to being at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. President Paul Coffman briefly touched on the city's 200th anniversary next year and the club's 25th anniversary in 2023. More discussion to follow. The annual 3rd grader's tour will be done by video again this year due to COVID restrictions. The annual glass show and sale will be Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14 at St. Joseph Activity Center. Members are reminded to sign up for Kroger Community Rewards and Amazon Smile. The club can earn donations from eligible purchases. Ed Goshe presented show and tell, featuring craquelle and dresser sets. The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 11 at 7 p.m. Show and Tell will feature novelty lamps and member's choice. Seneca Toastmasters Seneca Toastmasters met in hybrid fashion with eight members and one guest present in April. Earth Day was the theme of the meeting. President Suzanne Black called the meeting to order at St. Mary School. Toastmaster Tom Burwell introduced Jim Black for the opening and Pledge of Allegiance. John Curtin and Mike Houck shared the floor presenting humorous stories. Curtin continued with the word of the day, "abate," meaning to reduce or reuse. The purpose of the word of the day is to use it properly in a speaking opportunity during the meeting. Table Topics were presented by Curtin with the following responses: Allen O'Nan – Ohio has strict fines for littering -- $500 and 60 days of litter clean up. Do you think this is too harsh? Suzanne Black – California has less fines -- $100 and 8 hrs. of litter clean up. Which rule is more fair? Jim Black – Please give your opinion on natural burial. Burwell – Is the extra charge for license plates for hybrid cars fair? Laurel Lilly – What is the biggest threat to the environment? Houck – Global warming vs. climate change, what's your opinion? Arlene Rahm-Scherf/Mike Houck – What changes have you seen to abate the environmental issues? General Evaluator Jim Black evaluated the meeting and called upon Grammarian Lilly and Timer Houck for their reports. President Suzanne Black conducted the business meeting reviewing the upcoming District 28 virtual conference to be held April 23 and 24. Redistricting and new officers were discussed and will be voted on at the conference. The slate of officers for Seneca Toastmasters was also presented and discussed.
