Tiffin Right to Life Tiffin Right to Life held a quarterly meeting for members on April 13; twenty-two people attended. After prayer, minutes of the previous quarterly meeting were approved. A detailed Treasurer's report was provided and approved by attendees. Following much discussion, members present also approved donations to three organizations to assist with their pro-life efforts: 1) The Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio, 2) Created Equal, and 3) Knight of Columbus-Tiffin Council #608. Election of officers for two-year terms took place (having been postponed from January). Diane Moyer was elected President; Jan Sampson was elected Secretary. Moyer thanked Danielle Park for serving as a representative from Calvert Catholic Schools, and welcomed Emma Collins as the new representative. Pre-paid orders for "Pro-Life Chick" t-shirts will be taken for anyone wishing to buy one. Shirts are available in female sizes; price per shirt begins at $7 but could be lower, depending on the total number of shirts ordered in bulk. To order a t-shirt, call Helen at (419) 448-8992 by April 30. The general public is invited to attend a free movie: "Roe v. Wade, the untold story" will be shown on Sunday, April 25, at 6:30 p.m. in the Upper Room at the Activity Center at St. Joseph Church, Tiffin. Local college and high school students are especially encouraged to see this film. Jeanette Plisky reviewed Ohio and federal legislation and discussed a proposed ordinance under consideration by the Toledo City Council. The "buffer zone" in the proposed ordinance would make impossible for pro-life advocates to pray on the public sidewalk at Capital Care abortion facility at 1160 W. Sylvania Ave. or offer counseling to clients. Pro-life people should contact Toledo Council Members to oppose the ordinance. Plisky also asked people to contact the US Senators to oppose federal legislation regarding: the so-called "Equality Act" (impedes religious rights and pro-life work), the "Global HER Act" (permanently eliminates the Mexico City policy that blocked the use of tax dollars for abortions outside the country), "For the People Act" (impacts 1st Amendment rights and changes election laws). Moyer reviewed changes in committee leadership and other assignments. She also discussed new pro-life billboard messages coming from April to July at various locations. Yard signs are also available. The Annual Right to Life Geranium Sale is planned for 8:30 a.m.–noon on May 8 at Wagner's Greenhouse. Covid-19 guidelines will be observed again this year. Details are in St. Mary and St. Joseph Church bulletins (bulletins are available online). The next meeting is scheduled for July 13. Seneca County Master Gardeners Twenty eight Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers met in person for the first time since March 2020 on April 13 at the Grace Baptist Church in Tiffin. Four additional members were present via Zoom. The Master Gardener Plant Sale will be May 15 and 16 at the Tiffin Flea Market. Bags of soil (20# and 50#) are available for anyone needing it for planting pots for the sale. Members should sign up on the availability sheet with all times you may be able to work at the plant sale. You will be contacted when the schedule is complete. Please save boxes as for use at the plant sale. We have been assigned a new spot this year. Anyone with artistic ability is asked to help make signs to post at the old location to direct people to the new location. Plants can be taken to the Extension office building on May 1. Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers will be at the JAMS Monthly Market on June 18, 19 and 20. Hours are noon-7 p.m., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. respectively, plus tear down on Sunday. This is another great opportunity to get our hours. Janet Cole introduced five of the six new members from the 2020 class who were in attendance: Linda Holman, Pam Biller, Steve Detillion, Ellen Bergman and Danielle Coats. Regina Vincent-Williams was not able to attend. Please let Janet know if you know anyone who may be interested in the new class beginning in 2022. The next class will be a hybrid model, with some speakers being remote, as well as some in-person classes. The Education Committee has a meeting scheduled for April 29. The Fairgrounds Committee met last Wednesday with 100% attendance. Cleanup dates have been set. The first is April 22 at 9 a.m. Rain date is April 23. Trash will be picked up, weeding done and Preen spread. The second date is May 6 at 9 a.m. with a rain date of May 7. There will be a sign-up sheet for watering and weeding at the next meeting. Those signing up to work need to bring their own tools (marked with your name), and trash bags for the refuse. Everyone please sign up to work at least 2 weeks, not consecutively, and keep a record of your hours worked. We have a blanket exemption from OSU, through June, as long as we follow all rules, including masks and social distancing even at the fairgrounds. Tim Mannas is sending out scholarship flyers and information to various places. Members are asked to place these flyers in churches, at places of work, gyms, etc. We need responses by June 10. The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. May 11 at Grace Baptist Church, 161 N. SR 101, Tiffin. Tiffin Rotary President Beth Schweitzer opened the April 13 meeting via Zoom. Rev. Phil Moerdyk gave an opening prayer. Guests today included prospective members Ben Heinlein, Char Pope and Donna McConohay urged all members to register for the Multi-District Conference. There is a contest to see which District can get the most registrations. To sign up, go to the calendar in DACdb. It will be April 23 and 24 — just Friday evening and Saturday morning. Some good presentations are planned. Beth reported as Health District Director that several mass vaccination clinics will be canceled until the Johnson & Johnson issue is resolved. Beth then thanked Charlene and Dave Thomas for the work they did in creating the Youth Assets Program via YouTube. Our program today was the 22nd presentation of Youth Assets Awards. It was opened by Sharon George, director of Family and Children First Council. Sharon thanked Rotary and Rotarian Molly Lofton for their support of this program as well as the Optimist Club and SMYL. The Honorable Judge Jay Meyer welcomed everyone and noted the 40 assets involved in the program. Search Institute has identified 40 positive supports and strengths that young people need to succeed. Half of the assets focus on the relationships and opportunities they need in their families, schools, and communities (external assets). The remaining assets focus on the social-emotional strengths, values, and commitments that are nurtured within young people (internal assets). Rev. Dr. Jan Kucera gave the opening prayer and discussed the benefits of the program. Rotary president Beth Schweitzer said it was Rotary's privilege to be involved. Then emcee Keith Hodkinson introduced the 30+ students and adults who were being honored. Among them this year was Judge Meyer as well as many kids and adults from area schools. New Riegel American Legion Commander Mike Nye opened the April 19 meeting of the New Riegel American Legion at 7:30 p.m. Member Dave Creeger passed away. Buckeye Boys State Orientation will be May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Green Springs American Legion Post. A donation was given to the Black Swamp Area Council. Thank you cards were received from the Jean Snyder family and the Harry Good family, along with donations. Commander Nye Justin Elchert and past Commander Ron Clouse were elected as delegates to the District Convention. Kisha Carver, a post member was on hand to explain the program for Aligning Veterans for a Better Tomorrow. She is the Regional Managing Volunteer. The next meeting is May 3 at 7:30 p.m. American Legion Auxiliary Unit #260 American Legion Auxiliary Victory Unit 260 met April 20 at the American Legion hall. The meeting opened in regular form by Pres. Brenda Gregor. Eleven members participated in the Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble. All reports were approved as given. Susan Shade presented a "Thank You" note for the donation to Alex Shade for his Eagle Scout project. The Attica Area Veterans Park will resume construction with the electrical work as soon as the weather permits. Auxiliary will decorate the Seneca East Public Library window in May. The display will be up from May 1 until June 14. Poppy sales will be May 14 and 15. Volunteers are needed to sell poppies. Please call Marilyn Kochel at (419) 492-2503 if you can help. Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 31. A ceremony similar to 2020 will be held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Attica Venice Cemetery. The Sons of the American Legion will hold the annual Blessing of the Bikes on May 8 at the Legion hall. The April 18 Drive thru dinner went well. Another drive thru dinner is planned for May 16. Nan Schumacher will chair for cookie donations. The Charter was draped in memory of recently deceased members, Adelphia Martin and Dawn Bordner. Memorial donations were given in their honor. Buckeye Girls State orientation is May 2 at 1 p.m. at Plymouth Unit 447. Aubrey Beard will represent Unit 260. Next meeting is May 18. June meeting is June 15 after which we will pause until September. Kiwanis Club of Tiffin Emily Eichhorn, Health Educator for the Seneca County General Health District (SCGHD), spoke about Naloxone, often referred to by the brand name of Narcan, at the April 22nd meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin. The meeting, via Zoom, had 24 in attendance. Emily is a native of Tiffin and began as a volunteer in 2018 at the SCGHD after graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Public Health from Kent State University. She started full-time in August of 2019. The SCGHD partners with a number of local agencies in Tiffin and Fostoria. Those include CROSSWAEH, Factor Support Group Addiction Service, Rigel Recovery Services, H.O.P.E. (Fostoria) and Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital's Emergency Care Center. In working with CARSA, the SCGHD has distributed over 400 kits and trained over 500 individuals. Naloxone is only effective against opioids and knocks the drug off of brain receptors. It will be effective for 30 – 90 minutes as it does not take the opioid out of the body so it may return to brain receptors. Naloxone is not addictive and can be used multiple times. A deterrent to overdosing and using Naloxone to recover are the side effects from using it. Emily said that some that use opioids realize they need to change but some will continue to struggle with addiction. The most common form of Naloxone is a nasal spray. It also comes in muscle injection form but is more difficult to use. Shelf life of Naxolone is about two years. It can be used after expiring and may help but also may not be as effective. The meeting opened with the song "Chain Breaker." Bernie Steinmetz led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Bonnie Boroff served as the greeter. Mary Lewis introduced her guest, Sarah Jones, a student at Sentinel and at Seneca East. Club vice president Eric Willman remembered Lew Hurst's dad, who recently passed away. Pat DeMonte provided the prayer. Darlene Bloom, Sharon Rigby and Shirley Smith celebrated their birthdays. Julie and Rusty Adkins celebrated their wedding anniversary and Steve Schreiner and Bob Shreiner celebrated club anniversaries. Mark Zeno is collecting items for the upcoming garage sale and planning has started for the Grade A Celebration.
