Blue Jackets survive late blast

NEW RIEGEL — Calvert's Caitlyn Borer gave second-ranked New Riegel a big scare late, but the Blue Jackets quashed the rally Tuesday to claim a 4-3 Sandusky Bay Conference River Division win.New Riegel led 4-0 heading into the top of the seventh, but Borer's three-run homer with one out closed the gap quickly.However, Kayleigh Lininger recovered by striking out the next batter and then induced a ground out to lock up the win for the Blue Devils (19-1, 11-0 SBC), ranked second in Division IV.The Blue Jackets seemed to take control early, plating single runs in the first, second and third innings before tacking on another in the bottom of the sixth.Meanwhile, Lininger and the defense held the Senecas in check, never allowing a baserunner to pass second and only allowing two baserunners once. That brief scoring chance came in the fifth, when Maddie Schumacher and Kesley Shiley led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but two pop ups and a strikeout ended the threat.Katie Dryfuse paced New Riegel, going 3 for 3 with two runs. Lauren Gabel singled and scored, Jordan Hohman doubled and knocked in a run, Lininger singled, Aubrey Bouillon and Gracie Gosche each added an RBI and Lizz Walter scored.Lininger fanned 10 and scattered six hits and a walk to earn the win.Selah Moyer took the loss for Calvert (12-5, 8-4).Shiley ended with two singles and a run, Kate Rombach singled and scored and Kara Mangiola singled. Tornadoes out-scrap Blue StreaksBri Landers drove in the go-ahead run with a sac fly in the fifth, and Gracie Chester belted a two-run homer in the fourth Tuesday to key Columbian's 4-3 win against Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division foe Sandusky.Sandusky scored all of its runs in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead, but Chester tied the game with her homer.Mariam Al-Zakwani led off the fifth for TC by reaching on an error, advancing all the way to third on the play.She later scored on Landers' sac fly to center to put the Tornadoes (11-10) up 4-3.Chester added a single for TC, Kaitlyn Bates had a run and RBI, Kenadie Sherman singled and Landers tacked on a run, single and four steals.Reliever Haileigh Kutscher picked up the win.Jaycie Rowe doubled and scored for the Blue Streaks, Alyson Albrycht went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Maleah Clinton singled and scored, Ava Mailard scored, Brooke Parker and Kathleen Ekleberry both singled and Abbi Wade knocked in a run.Brianna Poole suffered the loss.It was Columbian coach Erica Cok's 50th win. Henney, Smythe spark BellevueHURON — Kyra Henney doubled in the game's lone run in the sixth and Maci Smythe twirled a one-hitter Tuesday as Bellevue edged Huron 1-0.Smythe struck out eight, walked one and allowed just a double in the second inning.Henney's double in the sixth for the Lady Red drove in Jillian Sumser, who also belted two singles.Kearston Lundsford, Smythe and Kendall Collins each added a single. Warriors down Lakota 5-1, extend win streak to 6SYCAMORE — Reese Hannam held Lakota in check on the mound Tuesday and Mohawk did enough offensively to gain a 5-1 win over the Raiders. Mohawk plated a run in the bottom of the first and then tacked on three more in the third. The Warriors (13-7) had just four hits off Kenny Rice, but Tyler Hayman had two of them, including a double and Nathan Geary doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Landen Snyder had a single and Blake Harper drove in a run.Hannam went all seven innings, allowing a run on four hits, while fanning seven and walking four. Rice suffered the loss, giving up five runs (two earned) with five punchouts and four walks in six innings of work. TC tennis wins again, moves to 18-1SANDUSKY — Another day, another win for Columbian tennis.This time, the Tornadoes traveled to Sandusky and came away with another dominating 5-0 win.At singles, TC's No. 1 Jacob Weingart topped Tiernan Jesrani 6-2, 6-1, while No. 2 Brian Siesel beat Michael Franklin 6-3, 6-4 and No. 3 Trey Shuey dispatched Ben Skavnak 6-1, 6-0.At No. 1 doubles, the TC pair of Landin Daum and Tyler Yandura downed James Robinson and Mason Hayberger 6-4, 6-1 and the No. 2 duo of Drew Vasko and Felix Bogart won 6-1, 6-2 over Sam Didion and Nolan Bier.The Tornadoes improved to 18-1 overall and 9-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division.
